So I went to school there, was there in 97 when it flooded and the dikes burst in Grand Forks. Earlier this year, must have been January, I was shoveling my driveway and the thought of the guy who was managing the floods in 97 came into my mind. That dude, man, he worked night and day during that flood organizing the fight, coordinating the volunteers, all of that stuff. He had a goatee and the skin on his face not covered by hair looked permanately frost bit. He was on the TV news at least everyday and most often a few times a day. He was just some city worker, Public works director I guess, who had to step it up big time when the water came. And did he ever. The shoveling wasn't hard, so I don't know what triggered my memory of him. Maybe it was the cold and the thought I always had about that guy needing to bundle up a little more. I don't know, but his effort has stayed with me even now. I guess it's stuck with a lot of people, cause I see he's now the mayor of Fargo. A noble spirit embiggens the smallest man.

Problems with the red river. -The slope of the land is about 1 foot per mile from Fargo to Canada. -Flows north means the ice can be melted at Fargo but frozen at Grand Forks.

I grew up in Grand Forks, and remember a big sandbagging operation in the mid 80s. My house wasn't very far from the river so it was an exciting time for us. I haven't been back ever since I moved away, but I doubt that house is still standing after the big flood in the 90s. Sure, looting can be an issue in Fargo. Its a fairly large city. You really have to be careful around wood chippers there too.
