I saw several teams girth hitching slings to lengthen them to build anchors in Ouray because they didn't have cordelettes or supertape and the chains were set far back from the cliff edge. I had been taught tying a good knot into itself (slings) OK, but girth hitching sling to another sling =bad and girth hitching nylon to spectre =worse.... Because can loosen and tighten over and over and cut each other What is the rule of thumb here?

Ice is so fickle that the loss of strength in a sling isn't your major concern? Girth hitching slings is no longer regarded as fondly as it used to be. There are a number of articles out there about this http://www.bdel.com/...p_archive.php#110906 ("Connecting two slings together").
