While climbing in Rock Canyon today, we saw about ten bighorns. This wasn't too weird until one appeared at the top of the slab that we were climbing. My brother was on the route at the time and he was about 15 feet from the top when it showed up! It was one of the most incredible things I've ever seen, they're inspiring . Have ya'll had any similar expereinces? rob

fitch,

I was hiking in Joshua Tree one time (about 2 years ago) in a fairly remote location and was descending a steep narrow canyon. I kept hearing small rocks tumbling down the canyon, so I stopped and looked around. I was surrounded by Desert Bighorn sheep. There were about 6 or 8 high up on one side of the canyon and about the same number on the other side. I stood very still and a couple of them came down one side and went up th join the others on the opposite side. When doing this they passed within about 30 feet of me. Desert Bighorn are very seldom seen in JT. This was only my second sighting in 20 years, and by far the best. I would have given anything for a camera right then. I could have shot rolls of film. In spite of their reclusive nature--they didn't seem to be bothered by my being there. I must have watched them for 20 minutes. I finally walked on--out the bottom of the canyon--and each time when I looked back, they were still there.

The Quarry and the Mountain Shop put on a trad day first of Oct. One showed up then also, with lots and lots of people around, way cool.

Mount Timpanogos has a big herd of goats (like in the link above), but I've never seen a big horn until hiking the ridgeline to the Cascade Mountain peaks (way up on top a few miles east of Rock Canyon) this last summer.

My ex-boyfriend and I were out four wheeling in Canyonlands near Moab last December. We had just made it down the major switchback part of Shafer Trail (had snow and ice on it, kinda white knuckled it) and we came around a corner and a herd of them (about 3 rams, the rest female I guess) came running out onto the road in front of us from the right of our car and crossed over and started walking up this huge rock pile. Was the most amazing thing to see those majestic animals out there in the middle of nowhere in their natural habitat. They'd stop and stare at us staring at them every now and then. We watched them gracefully traverse the rocks and disappear up into a canyon. Simply amazing to watch them.

I also saw a couple of them in Joshua Tree last January down much lower than they should have been, I think they were looking for food. They were still beautiful creatures but something about being on a dirt road in the middle of Canyonlands seeing them was more special.

I've seen bighorn in Anza Borrego and in Joshua Tree. Never in the Sierra. Closest was about 50' or so, they've not been particularly timid in my experience. I've seen Rocky Mountain bighorns in Alberta. Not only not timid, a group of 20+ were standing in the middle of the road licking the salt off it and cars had to drive around them 'cause they wouldn't move. This isn't all of them but it's the best of the pictures:
