This weekend, I am heading to Gatlinburg, TN with some friends. I was wondering if there was any roped climbing within 45 minutes to an hour from there? I have gone through the route database as well as i could and have found nothing helpful.

No, you're pretty much out of luck. The rock in the smokies is crap. There is a place called Look Rock about 30 or 40 minutes away in Townsend/Walland area on the foothills parkway. Save the time and don't go, not worth it. My best suggestion is enjoy some hiking in GSMNP.You'll get tired of Galinburg real quick, so some creeks and swimming holes can also provide a fun diversion. Sorry about the absense of climbing though. Have fun staying in what we like to call the Malignant Tumor of the Smokies.

Thanks. I started to figure that when i couldn't find anything in the route database. Well i guess that I can leave the gear at home.

If you extend your radius of travel to about the 1.5-2 hour mark you will find lots of great climbing, both on the TN side as well as in western NC. The climbing around Brevard, NC, including Looking Glass, is less then 2 hours from Gatlinburg.

Other then this, Gatlinburg has a cool cable car you can take out of town up into the mountains. A little spendy, but pretty sweet views and a great way to escape the tourist saturated downtown area.

I would probably do that, but I am not driving.

I've heard of some top secret bouldering in the smokies. I have no idea where it is. Maybe just wander around in the woods looking for rocks. Always a good plan...
