So, unless I'm mistaken, the only gym in the immediate Boston area is the aging Boston Rock Gym. It's north of the city, not at all accessible by public transport, and being rendered increasingly obsolete (not to mention tiny) by newer style gyms.
What do you Boston-area climbers think about a new gym, perhaps in Quincy or somewhere in walking distance from a T stop?
I've never been much of an entrepeneur, but this idea has made me curious...
(for those of you who've encountered this post twice, I mistakenly put it in the Trad forum first)

Man I would give my left arm for a gym of the 'T'. I am only able to get the on in woburn once a week and would really like to be climbing at leasts 3 times a week.

So I guess I would say if you build it they will come.

Yeah, that would be awseome. Carabiners Gym is opening soon. The only problem is that its in New Bedford. Ok New Bedford. Who the hell lives there. But seriously that would be much better.

HEY! New Beford people rock! So do Cape Coders... and it's right down the street from my school, and it's been 'under contrustion' for like 5 years, so just give up! I have! And there is no such thing as 'public transport' around here, it's called hitch hiking!

Fawn comes up the great idea of building a climbing gym on Cape Cod! Wait, I know I'll buy holds and drill them into...

I live in about a 12 minute car ride down 495 from Gravity in franklin...I would bother with driving to a gym in the boston area except maybe as a daytrip treat once in a while...I've never been to BRG, for exactly that reason.

There's another gym in Lincoln RI called the Rhode Island Rock Gym that I'm probably going to try out soon too, that's about a 35 minute ride for me...but again, no T ride there.

go check out www.newenglandbouldering.com they have a decent listing of stuff in the area.

It is for this exact reason that a number of us have undertaken construction of our own oversized "woody." It consists of twelve foot walls in an old squash court. We have built in bulges, 10, 20, 30 degree walls and a cave.
Construction should be done in the next month or so.

Hmm an old squash court, nice idea. Where does one acquire such an area for personal use?

Yeah, well, getting back to the original topic: Are Boston-area climbers interested in the prospect of a new gym that would be near a T stop, perhaps in Quincy or Braintree?

I'm not so interested in Rhode Island climbers or New Bedford climbers...unless they're interested in a new Boston gym.
Thanks!

Yes,
I would be very interested, as would my friends, and their friends, and their friend's friends...

Can one really have too many rock climbing gyms?

Ditto as I really don't care for the BRG. The more choices the better.

I think you guys would do well with that. I'm moving back up to that area in the next year (NH, VT, ME or somewhere back up home!) and here in DC we have 3 rock gyms in the surrounding suburbs that do really well. I think one more in boston would be really good and be a profitable business.
If you want a partner for starting it let me know

So should I save the time and hassle of having my friend ship my gear to me in Burlington? I was wanting to get back to climbing indoors or meet up with some peeps in the Boston area, but I'm staying in Burlington and working in Medford? or Bedford... hell, it's like exit 19 off I95.

Mike, post up in the MASS CLIMBERS thread on the partners/east coast forum. you'll get better info there, than from a 3 years old thread, that was last replied to on 12/05

I've been trying to search and find stuff, but the topics are somewhat disorganized, so I thought I had found something useful.

I guess I'll go back to the old method of asking all my coworkers. I did find a few references to the gyms in the area, but wanted to see if there have been any recent openings or if there's anything near Burlington, etc. I'm only here for work and don't live here, so I'm hoping to get some wall time in rather than hanging out in my hotel room all the time.
