How far are the climbing areas closest to Amsterdam? Are there good indoor gyms around Amsterdam? And how big is the climbing "community" there? i.e., how easy/hard would it be to find people to go climbing outdoors on weekends?

Amsterdam has 3 big (huge?) gyms and the scene is likewise. Lot's of indoor addicts there.

For outside, it's belgium that's cloest. Andyou need to drive at least 2,5 hours. Check out a routeplanner, for example amsterdam-mozet = 271 km. But for a weekend it's worth it.

If you are there for study reason,s check out the student alpine club. They drive south regularly.
