Okay, there are lots of movies with climbing in them: Eiger Sanction (1975 - Clint Eastwood), For your Eyes Only, MI-2, Vertical Limit, XXX.

Any of you have any favorites or suggestions of others to watch?

Looks like a winner. I'll check some local places as I'm a bit too impatient to order the video online.

Cliffhanger has to be the most realistic climbing movie ever! Seriously though, I can't remember the name of is but there was a pretty cool one with Sean Connery in it.

there's a movie that was made in the early 90's called K2, it'll be worth your while to check it out.

I have Vertical Limit on DVD. In fact, it was the movie that compelled me to get into rock climbing. I know it's not at all realistic, but Ed Veister's (spelling?) in it as himself for a few brief seconds, and the movie is certainly entertaining. I've watched it several times.

I also have some bouldering videos such as Friction and one with Chris Sharma.

I'm just looking for some entertainment, nothing necessarily serious for any learning value.

By the way, I thought Cliffhanger had Sylvester Stallone in it, not Sean Connery.

There is a seldom screened Werner Herzog directed film called Scream of Stone. It is a dramatization of the conquest of Cerro Torre in Patagonia. Stefan Glowacz is the only real climber with a speaking role.

Herzog is a brilliant director but... this movie was probably too ambitious. It's shot on location, apparently during filming Glowacz and Herzog were caught in a storm on the face and had to dig a snow cave to survive. The story is disjointed but the cinematography is terrific. Donald Sutherland is in it as well.
Worth watching.

(a review follows...)

The film final 40 minutes are
masterful as the two climbers - one
using more modern techniques, the
other doing it the frightening old
fashioned way - attempt to scale the
Cerro Torre. If the heights don’t
take your breath away, the
panoramic photography will; it’s
an eyeful.

Yea, sorry about my last post. I wrote it kind of confusingly. I was making fun of Cliffhanger and then on a completley different note asking about a climbing movie that Sean Connery was in. I was more an alpine movie that took place in Europe. The movie was set in the 20's or 30's and was released in the 70's or 80's. Not sure though.

Ontario Guide

The move you are refering to is Sean Connery's 1982 film Five Days One Summer set in 1932.

Third Man on the Mountain(color) is a Disney film, made in the 1950s, and is a highly fictionalized rendering of the conquest of the Matterhorn. Stars Michael Rennie (as Capt. Winter), James MacArthur, and Janet Munroe (I believe). It's hokey by today's standards - the complete antithesis of Masters of Stone - but conveys a real and fresh mountaineering spirit.

The Unconquered (B&W)was filmed in the 1940s and starred Gilbert Roland as a conflicted mountain climbing guide. Marvelous falling sequence at the end, with a rappel rope streaming downward. [ This may be a film that was lost forever in a fire or flood].

I would also like to cast a vote for "Hard Grit." Even watching it from my sofa, I had to chalk up periodically--my hands were so sweaty.

This one barely qualifies, Guns of Navarone from around 1961. Is a WWII film but the premise is that the afore mentioned Guns can only be reached by commandoes scaling a towering rock face.

If you like WWII epics this is a great movie with a great cast.

There's this documentary called "Everest". Originally came out for the IMAX theater. It's go amazing cinematography, and is quite inspiring. It's exciting, and also sad at the same time.
