I know nothing about these, but a Chinese climbing buddy who is about to climb Choyu asked if I knew

"Ever heard of Methazolamideas an alternative to Diamox?"

So I thought I'd ask here? Any info?

Diamox = Acetazolamide

Methazolamide and Acetazolamide are both carbonic anhydrase inhibitors. Acetazolamide, I'm semi-familiar with. I've actually seen it dispensed twice (in about 4 years that I've worked in retail pharmacy). One time it was to someone actually traveling to Tibet, another it was to someone flying to Colorado.

Between those two drugs, I'd say there's going to be more data/safety with Acetazolamide.

If you're really looking for an alternative to a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor, check out the data for this well known Phosphodiesterase 5 Inibitor: Sildenafil.

So, can Diamox be a substitute for Sildenafil? Cool

Haha...unfortunately, I don't think so. I can't think of any reason that the mechanism of action for a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor would also have a vasodilatory effect.

PDE inhibitors were originally developed for pulmonary hypertension and angina pectoris.

DORK JOKE!

Anyway.... so could sildenafil potentially prevent AMS because it increases exercise tolerance by vasodilating the pulmonary vasculature, is that your logic?

I ask because it's interesting, and I'm curious if any research has been done to investigate the effects of viagra @ altitude.

The third article in joshy8200's link discusses that.

Thanks All, I sent a link of this thread to my buddy in China and he can read it since I don't think I can accurately relay the info.

Great story. In 1992 I pulled a Chinese immigrant out of a snowy ditch in his economy car stuck in his first snow storm in New Mexico. He was headed to a friends house there and he had driven from Texas. He had only clothing for Austin weather. We got him a Walmart winter outfit. The only winter boots they had to fit him in his price range were fuzzy afterski boots. I made gaitors out of paracord and Hefty Garbage Bags. When we got thru with him he looked like Atilla the Hun had gone shopping at Walmart for an Arctic Expedition and took him for his first vertical expedition. He has now made many serious alpine climbs and is trying to climb the highest peaks on each continent. This is his first climbing expedition back home in China on ChoyuSly

That is hilarious. I have a similar story with a picture. My buddy showed up with me to do a winter hike of Roan Mountain (east coast 6000ft 'peak') wearing this:

Pleas tell us that you let him suffer a bit while he pondered the errors of his ways.

It's a pretty short hike that we did up to one of the balds on Roan, but he made it. He didn't really complain. As long as he kept moving he said it was alright. It was pretty brutal (for southeast standards). Snow drifts along the trail were thigh deep, temps probably around 10-15F and winds...I'm guessing conservatively 35mph.
