During christmas i'll be Travelling to Goa, a relatively unexplored area of India (in terms of cllimbing).
It a coastal region with lots of granite crags.
I wanted to do DWS as
- I won't be able to take ropes (not that i have any)
- I'll only have rock boots and a crap load of chalk; i have a bag of black diamond white gold (is it worth using this or will it get and should i buy cheap chalk cubes instead?)
- I have'nt been on an outdoor excursion or even an indoor in ages (2 months plus, as i got grounded for climbing instead of studying for a math exam which i subsequently failed).
The main problem is i've never done DWS and am pretty worried about what i should look out for.
Water depth, kind of tide, etc.
(BTW I've never actually climbed anything graded as its not such a big thing in Hong Kong, we just climb and say "that was pretty hard" or "that was pretty easy")

relatively unexplored could spell danger.
Is it even suitable to solo or are you just doing it because its inconvenient for you to take a rope?
Id be weary of submerged rocks to say the least. But i think that may be the least of your problems.

I agree i could be dangerous.
im genuine interested in DWS and want to get some experience in in before goint to thailand next summer.
i think i might go with cush's idea and boulder.
just generally, what is a suitable depth?
i've info on shoes and chalk but tides is what im worried about. depth and all. i wont get to daring with routes.
(i wont be going alone, ill be going with my brother, he's not a great climber and probably wont climb, just swim. he a strong swimmer and has saved my ass in other situations.)

well I've jumped off a ground level diving board and gone several meters under water. I'd do a surface dive all around where ever you want to climb and make sure there isn't anything below you for a LONG ways.

isn't this obvious. Make sure the water is deep enough and do some 50ft jumps into the sea when you know its safe. Land straight feet first. You can really hurt yourself bad if you land wrong.

i second this motion. its pretty much common sense, if u feel ur going to hit the bottom dont do it. also water depth really depends on the hieght of the route.

Yeah, what he said.
Sounds like you're setting yourself up for something potentially nasty. And considering all the potentially nasty things that are in India, that's saying a lot.
Oh and another thing - backwoods India is about the LAST place I'd want to be after I sustained some heinous injury. Just thought I'd put that out there...

You absolutely need to snorkel the area first if it is not an established DWS area.
A big bag of chalk could get taken at an airport but you may not find any in Goa. Never been there.
Are you even sure there is DWS there?
Why not just boulder on established stuff?
You don't need to do any DWS before you come to Thailand, you just need to focus on your climbing. Once you are here, you will either be able to do it or you won't. It will have nothing to do with your prior DWS experience, and everything to do with your ability to do hard moves on overhanging rock with a limited amount of chalk in a tropical climate :)

but if you are, i agree.
originally the grading system was made for you to understand your limits then push it futher. not to rate climbers.
the whole point is to test your self against yourself, push your own limit not the limits of what others have acheived
- i say this yet i enter competitions...

My buddy fractured his sternum and broke 2 vertebrae when he hit the water wrong after falling 35 feet. Luckily there were 5 of us to hold him stable and swim him 300 meters down river to a pull-out where an ambulance could access the water. He didn't hit any rocks, just the water.
You won't need chalk. At all the areas I've ever climbed deep water, you usually have to jump in the water anyway first.
I would strongly NOT recommend going off into a remote area with one other person and trying to do some deep water.
You're asking to die.

Dude, there's enough information on climbing in India if you google up. Dreamroutes.org, facebook groups, orkut groups, so on.
There maybe DWS in Goa, but rock is pretty chossy in most parts of Goa. If you have tried climbing in Hawaii, then pretty similar. You would have huge jugs coming off in places like Anjuna beach. There may be other locations in Goa with better quality rock, but why bother, for us.
Badami and Hampi are a half a day's journey from Goa. Check them out. Badami has fantastic red sand stone cliffs, with horizontal crack systems. And Hampi has awesome bouldering scene. Most of the climbs are really freaking hard! On tendons. Crimps and overhangs, gods own sense of humor.
Anyways, Banglore further south has some of the best climbing down South of India, and Mumbai and Pune have very vibrant climbing community and climbs nearby.
