Pants or Shorts?

Hi there,

I'm new to climbing, actually never gone before and was looking at pictures of the gym I'm going to be going to with a friend over the weekend and almost everyone in the pictures are wearing pants.

At first I assumed I'd wear shorts since it was a pretty physical activity and I'd want to stay cool, but I see everyone in the pictures wearing rolled up pants...am I right in assuming pants are worn for protection against rubbing and whatnot?

Thanks

Meh, I prefer shorts unless it's cold, wide crack, or if I'm topping out on rough boulders.
You're legs don't tend to rub too much when you're climbing.

This may not seem obvious to the uninitiated but if you don't remember a beanie you will probably not fit in very well.

Yes, pants will protect your legs, especially knees, from scratches (not from bruises, unfortunately...).

Also, don't assume that the gym will be warm, just because it is indoors. Our gym isn't, though we wish it were.

But... it is perfectly fine to wear shorts.

If you choose shorts, make sure you put on those shiny-stretchy-fabric soccer shorts. (Champion brand?) They are a trademark of every climbing gumby. Oh, and under-armor T-shirt, of course.

Thanks Lena,

I actually don't own a pair of shorts as of now which was part of my concern, I did though just cut an old pair of jeans into shorts and i think they'll work just fine. They are a little short though and the pockets hang out of the legs but oh well...I'll just make sure not to go commando. I also am going to bring some chaps just for good measure.

Well Magnus has a big ass and needs some pretty baggy pants to cover the crack.

I wear loose painters pants. My climbing partner wears shorts. Our gym (like most gyms?) has rough walls and the pants prevent scrapes but hinder movement, particularly on high steps. If you are working slabs or near vertical near your limit (wear you are likely to slip and hit the wall) both consequences of pants apply. For overhanging routes you don't usually scrape the wall. I may have to go to shorts since the main route setter at the gym has picked a tendency toward high steps.
I see a lot of spandex which would resolve both issues but I'm not going there.

I've Always worn jeans, I don't roll them up when I climb. Never had a problem. But then again the only time I ever wear anything but jeans is in the summer when I go wakeboarding

Screw taping. I'm climbing in Tron gauntlets from now on. Even when there aren't any cracks.

when I'm in the gym I wear the same clothing I wear outside. In the summer I climb in a jock strap and tube socks and in the winter I wear a
snow mobile suit with helmet. Train for your conditions.

i wear trousers because a) i have a tendency to ram my knee into all things abrasive, and b) the first time i went climbing i got rope burn on the delicate skin in behind my knee. ymmv, but i prefer being a little warm to being a little sore...

It's all personal preference. Lots of people wear pants because it's more uncomfortable to slam your exposed shins or knees into the rock than it is to be a bit hot.

I will wear shorts on occasion, but for me, my go to pants are a beat up old pair of thrift store chinos. My girlfriend was putting away my laundry one day and actually put them with my nice slacks because the tag said "Banana Republic."

I can say for absolute certain, though, that climbing in scrub pants is the worst of both worlds.
