Steve. . .that's your first ever? I hope you get to do some in the summer too. I'm dreaming about summer slogging already. Have fun! It's beautiful up there.

We got up there around 7:00am and started the ascent. There was not much snow on the ground so snowshoes were not neccessary, however I did take a few steps that sent the bottom half of my body into the snow. The first half the hike we had really good weather, but once we got up a little high the wind really started to pick up, so much that it looked like something out of a movie with all the spin drift (i think that is the name for it) flying around. It sort of reminded me of a sand storm in the desert or something. It stayed pretty windy as we climbed up the east side, but once we hit the exposed ridge the wind really picked up. So much so that I was a little worried about getting blown off the ridge. I got to the summit where I downed a few hand fulls of trail mix and took a couple pictures and started to head back down (summit registry was burried in the snow somewhere and I was not about to look for it). I was happy when we finally got of the ridge and we were blocked from the wind a little bit, but I was really tired, a couple of times I would take a step and my foot would sink into the snow a few feet and I would just fall over exhausted, but oddly enough we made it down pretty quick and got back to the car around 1:30pm and made it back to my house by 3:00pm. All in all I had a great time and I am convinced that winter ascents are much harder then summer, normally after a summer ascent I still have some energy left over, but today.....no. I talked to my partners and we want to do another on before chistmas, but plans are not solid yet, I am however hopeful.

I went up bierstadt about 4 weeks ago and it sounded like my trip to a T. We took skis and toured up to the final rocky ridge then scrambled to the top. The snow was very windblown and inconsistant. We skied the crud from the ridge to where the bushes start then walked to the truck...On my trip the wind was blowing the snow just as you described too.

that is the classic first. i remember doing it new years eve just before 2001 in 3 hours car to car in perfect weather. i also remember having a hell of an epic on squaretop, which is right across the road. the winds on that pass can be nuts.
