wow Fiend, you'd think you were tempting the mods or something. I've always wanted to see the Fish free-booze booth and try bouldering for real, too bad I'm a 180# monster and unsuitable for most bouldering pursuits. How much fun is the PBC if you suck at bouldering? Is Cochise Stronghold too hot to climb by late April? [ This Message was edited by: tim on 2002-12-20 08:17 ]

The PBC site is in "my backyard". I'd recommend showing up a week or two early. Camping is very mellow away from the main campground and there are usually other climber's arriving early (typically from Colorado). It is a great way to get use to the rock and the general gestalt of the area. Lots to do and see other than strictly climbing, such as Boyce Thompson Arboretum, cool canyons, Salado and Mogollon cultural sites, desert peaks, climbing in the Superstitions (Zonerland!), etc. Go to Greg's website arizonabouldering.com to get info on the nearby limestone climbing south of Globe (Homestead). Brent edit to add this: With this post I went from "boulderer" to "toproper". This seems very unfair and out of order. Oh well.. [ This Message was edited by: taorock on 2002-12-20 08:30 ]

Brent, I wasn't actually planning on participating, since either of these gals just may kick my ass. I was only planning on scalping some tickets--and then watching (ala Peter Sellers). Curt

'Sup, Michelle. The partying doesn't get too out of hand (well, depends on who you hang out with). You don't need to bail to a motel to find a less inebriated crowd, and you'd be missing 1/2 the fun if you did. Any friend of Bill's is a friend of mine. PM me if you'd like more info. Ed

YIPPPEEEE!!! I wait every year for this and it is almost upon up! And Amber, darlin', you CAN go. Turns out I was wrong (I know, a first ) and Moab is the weekend before the PBC. PBC starts around April 25ht this year, not the traditional 4/20.... Unfortunately, I still won't be able to go as I am trying to save up vacation time for my honeymoon in October. It seems I'm getting married, or some silly thing! Yeppers, Ivan proposed to me on 1/19 and I happily accepted I CAN'T WAIT for the PBC! It look as if Mark and his lady-friend will be staying with us that weekend and anyone else who wants to camp with us, please PM me and I'll keep y'all organized and pretty much guarantee an awesome time to be had by all! ~Erica [ This Message was edited by: climberchic on 2003-01-27 19:03 ]

Are you kidding? I have been waiting for this since...Monday after the comp last year! A note on the jello wrestling-no matter how much you oil up ladies, you WILL look like an oompah-loompah for a few days after, and smell like jello. Anyway, voodoo also does the free liquor thing-buy a shotglass for $2, and they refill it until the liquor is no more. One way of keeping warm when the temp drops @ night. (That's my story and I'm sticking to it )

Is it worth going for those not planning to compete? Will there be climbing for those not entering the comp? I can maybe climb V0 after much flailing. Any word on which pros will be there? Please excuse my ignorance, but Ive never been to a climbing comp before.

If I can make it, I will be there with camera in hand. I'll take an archive of pics and am looking forward to all the hams layed out on the rocks. I might even try a few climbs if I can find a few people to spot my big a**. 220 lbs is a lot to spot but not hard to spot.

ill definately be there, thisll be my third year running. its the best party of the year, every year. one thing tbnhough, if you dont pay to compete, they wont let you climb, or spot, or even sign a scorecard. it helps to keep everyone honest. also, well be heading up to flagstaff for some lovely limestone bouldering after the comp, so anyhone wanting to tag-a-long, just look for the tall skinny guy with mad tattoos. ill prolly be wearing a red sweatshirt that says "madman" across the front(its been my nickname for faaaar too long ) anyone wanting to hook-up, pull down, and slam a few brewskies...give me a holler...

how much is the fee to 'compete'? http://www.phoenixboulderingcontest.com/ nevermind, I'm retarded, it's $60. christ that's a lot of dough. how far is Sedona and Cochise from there again? I always wanted to see the Fish 'free booze' tent. I dunno if it's worth $60 though.

From Queen Creek, Sedona is probably at least two and a half hours away. Cochise is also about two and a half hours away. Many of the routes in Cochise will be closed for raptor nesting at that time though.

"Is it worth going for those not planning to compete? Will there be climbing for those not entering the comp?" At last years PBC my friend and I were sent away from everything we attempted to boulder on. We were not entered in the competition and told everyone that kicked us on that we weren't, but even Mr. PBC, Jim Waugh, told us that we weren't allowed to climb anywhere. I was utterly disgusted with the entire scene there. My friend and I bailed on Sat. to get out of there. I guess we missed the big party, but I don't think it would have been worth it. So to answer the quote above, there is not climbing for non-competitors, and if you like big crowds you will thouroughly enjoy the "woodstock" of climbing.
