i tried to show a few freinds some slacklining however i got a bit of critizm for it being just like tight rope walking. anyone else get anything similar?

Yes, I get that all the time.
"Are you in the circus?"
Tight-rope-walking is done on a tensioned steel cable. This is done with heavy duty equipment that is very espensive. The walker then uses a pole for balance, they also use special shoes.
I have met several people who have actually walked cables in the circus.... when they tried my slackline, they could only get a few steps.
It is VERY different.
You can NOT move the cable by using your body weight. That's why it's necessary to have the pole for balance.
That's the beauty with slacklining. It's simple.
There's nothing but YOU, the slackline and gravity.
I don't think it's a put down when someone mistakes it for tight-rope-walking. I just correct them and go about my business...... having a good time on the line.
BTW: I'll be setting up a highline in JTree around New Year. Anyone interested in walking, let me know. I know rrradam is up for it.

Wow I was in J-Tree not long after New Year's and saw a slackline set up REALLY high near Ryan Campground.. was that you guys? :-D
