So I'm standing in line for my turn in the red box (minds out of gutter please) when the guy in front of me asks me if I've seen Inception. So happens that I was waiting in line to rent it. So I punched him in the stomach, grabbed the movie and ran. Ok, that's not what happened. Turns out he didn't care for it, but I was still bent on renting it so I just nod and say something along the lines of "no movie is liked by everyone". It got me thinking. What do you think the most liked movie of all time is? I'm not going to bother trying to qualify "liked", but just in a general sense. A couple that came to mind: Wizard of Oz ET Princess Bride Forrest Gump Zombie Hookers from Hesperia I figure it can't be too old, a la Casa Blanca, because I know that wouldn't hold my interest. Can't be too cheesy (Top Gun). Love stories (Titanic) wouldn't make it as I know they give me ulcers. Too many people dislike Sci Fi just on principles to vote the Matrix. And, as we see on Mountain Project, the world is full of pansy-assed pacifists so anything with even a little violence would be out. Hrm, on second thought, I might have to pull Zombie Hookers off the list of nominees. So what say you?

The awesomest movie evar: Army of Darkness I also hear many people have enjoyed the Shawshank Redemption, might be why it's at the top of most lists.

I'm going for most generally liked movie. Although I loved AoD, I guarantee that there are plenty out there who don't. They're wrong, but still. Shawshank was epic and would be a good nominee, but too violent for some.

I think it almost has to be a kids movie that "works" for adults too. ET, Toy Story and Star Wars are all good candidates IMO. Forrest Gump could also work but it's kind of sad.

Star Wars. Some Christmas movie: -A Christmas Story -It's a wonderful life - maybe that's too old now and with cable it isn't watched like it was 10 years ago. A kids movie: -Toy Story -Or a Disney one

I dunno dude, My GF has the TCM cable chanel so I get to watch alot of the old B&W classics, and damn, alot of them are really really captivating and really really good. Casablanca itself is pretty kewl. I think The Wizard of Oz is very close to the most liked movie of all time, and well, that movie is older than Casablanca (1937 I think) adn you can't leave out the Stooges. Tastes in movies is sooo very subjective in many cases, I don't think one single movie could be singled out as most liked.

Thats true. I can't think of a better resource with a larger sample size though. This page has the voting broken down by age - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0111161/ratings The under 18 and over 45 ages are underrepresented but they are represented.

I'll go with blazing saddles and Wizard of Oz on the list. I'll throw in Shawshank Redemption (edit just noticed it was mentioned too) and Armageddon for the hell of it.
