I don't care whether people refer to what I do as climbing or hiking. I climb or hike for me, not for them.

It's like, why are you a biker or a hippie or what ever. If you have to ask, then you wouldn't understand anyway.

Ha! I think this thread is great. I completely know what you mean. I can't count how many people have told me "Oh, I rock climb too." But once you start talking more to them, they say, "Oh, you use a rope and stuff?" They think that hiking or scrambling over some rocks = rock climbing. It has nothing to do with poeple "not wanting to be showed up" or being jealous. They just don't understand what climbing is. It doesn't help that the only mass media attention is through commercials and Hollywood movies. Or when they used to have that nutty speed climbing competition on the X-Games. In general, I think more younger people are being exposed to climbing through gyms, college outings, etc. Many high schools, workout clubs, and YMCA's are building indoor walls these days. So I suppose this attitude will change in the future . . .

Do you tell people you "climb" or "ROCK climb?" It can be frustrating, but now is your chance to educate these people. They are not trying to be mean or stupid (I'm sure they aren't). They simply do not know what this sport is. Just educate them, be nice, and you will have accomplished your task. [ This Message was edited by: ksfrogman on 2002-12-28 08:03 ]
