As an avid outdoor enthusiast and software developer, I've been interested in making online tools and mobile apps that help climbers. I finally have a good chunk of time to potentially develop something, but I need some input in selecting a problem to be addressed by an app or online tool. It would be much appreciated if I could get some input from all you guys via this short survey: https://spreadsheets.google.com/...5adXk4WlpWVHYyaHc6MQ Feel free to throw out any ideas in the thread. The main point of the survey is, "Describe a new or improved online tool, website, or mobile app that you would like to be developed and available for you to use." Cheers

An app that shows where all the unclimbed classics are. But I would be allowed to have it.

I think it would be cool if there was a RC.com app. Most of the good routes are already on the website, as well some good climbing info. But if there was a easy app to access the great info and routes on the website, that could be amazing. Another idea would be to make a route app that you can load up routes to your sd card and pull them up later on a map, when you are offline to find when you are out climbing. Backpacker mag. has a app that does this for hikes, it works really well. thats just my two cents.

Like most climbers, I like porn. If you could develop an app that instantly transfers me from the porn site I'm looking at to RC.com or the taco, so my wife thinks I'm looking at climbing rather than porn, then I'd buy that from you.

Cheers Some sort of augmented reality app that when you point your camera phone at the cliff face, it will show all the routes on that particular face, it will help all the noob sport climbers that can't route-find their way out of a paper bag without colored tape and a label with a funny name to start with.

as cool as this would be i can't even imagine how difficult it would be to make. they have things like this for the night sky but doing it for every cliff face even at just a small area would be an enormous undertaking

I would like the app "global climbing guide" except with a better UI, better features, integration with Facebook for convenient login, and somehow get it to be universally accepted as the 8a.nu of climbing apps

I would like an app that can 'see' the crack I'm about to climb and tell me how many #2s and #3s to bring..and tell me if I need to haul up the #4 or bigger Seriously: how about a 'craig finder' linked to your location...(and local REI walls don't count!) -Nos Feratu

Something like this but wireless: Smart Sunglasses that help you to recognize a cliff/crag by using an inbuilt camera while you look at your intended target... it would compare the image it "sees" with those images on the internet and its GPS location to recognize what you're looking at... then transmit wireless to the inside of your "sunglasses" an overlay of the route(s) and other information by voice command. So, you're at the end of a pitch and don't know where to belay? Just say "Where the fuck is the belay?" ...and sure enough, green majid arrows will appear and show you the way. Dunno what size cam to use? Just say "What size, bitch?" ...and the corresponding cam name and size will appear on the "screen" or a pre-determined cyber voice, something resembling, perhaps, Kate Beckinsale, will say "Try an offset green/yellow Alien in that flare, Dave. Or maybe try a See-Four-Point-Four a little bit lower if you would rather not die, Dave." ...and once the creation starts to self-learn it might add..."the rope seems awfully slack, Dave. Perhaps you should take in some more or your second will surely fall and die on that ledge" ...and then as it becomes self aware... "Dave, perhaps you should traverse to the right further and head up that beautiful dihedral." ...and so you do, fall across a sharp edge, your rope gets cut and you plummet to your death, while you hear the crazy cyber woman laughing her ass off!

I think something like this would be the most applicable. Utilizing a database like the one summit post has and you can update your FB or other social media with the location. Like you are checking into the Crag. I really don;t know how this would work and it would be a tough undertaking as far as managing the database goes.

An augmented reality tool would be awesome, but I don't think the technology is there. It would have to be accurate to a foot or so, in 3-dimensional space, not just 2-dimensional GPS coordinates. That kind of precision just isn't there for readily accessible consumer products. So it's an excellent idea, but it will have to wait until the technology can support it. Judging from input from the thread and the survey, it seems that there is a general appeal towards a social tool for finding data about climbs and gear. Data like cam info, topos, guidebooks, weather conditions. It seems that the main problem is that there's a lot of data out there but it's scattered and not socially oriented. Also seeing several votes for a climbing log. Great stuff guys, I appreciate the input, keep it coming.

A friend of mine had a good idea that he will never pursue, so maybe you can. An online guide book with: GPS coordinates for the start of the route, route description, topo, photo of crag with topo superimposed. Add in gear suggestions if you like. If you made the app generic, it could be updated by users or other programers in order to crowd source the database. Pretty much what others have said already, just worded differently I guess...

As much as I am enjoying the normal responses one gets to open posts on RC.com, I thought I would go ahead and ruin the flow with an actual answer - as well as responding to your survey. I have an app on my phone called "Grades" that translates YDS to other rating systems. It's a simple UI, and is very handy if you are going to climb overseas and don't wish to memorize the conversions. The only thing I dislike about it is that it doesn't offer all the rating systems. I have also seen a couple knot tying apps that are really useful. Some include video or photo tutorial, and it's a good way to pass the time if you are stuck waiting somewhere....get some light cord and go at it. Weather is also an important factor, so an app that has a direct link into the weather channel or something similar would be useful. And finally, an app that had an available database of local campgrounds and gear suppliers for the major climbing areas would be awesome. Good luck on your app, and if you need any help in beta feel free to contact me.

Hmmm, augmented reality app to find stuff.. I've had this exact idea kicking around for the last year or so. I've even made a website to try get enough funding for a prototype: http://craglist.drupalgardens.com/ In short this is no longer a technological problem - the technology was ready decades ago and mobile hardware has been up to spec for at least 6-12 months (watch the video clip on the web site: http://craglist.drupalgardens.com/content/route-explorer). I like paperback guidebooks. I have a lot sitting on the shelf, but I personally think they are a somewhat dated solution. If all of the silos of climbing info out there could somehow be aggregated, arranged and made accessible via a powerful mobile AR interface, I think it would revolutionise this sport. I know there will always be folks out there in the community anti-anything-tech, but if anyone has any constructive feedback on this idea, I would appreciate it. Cheers, -- ab1
