Im from Ireland and I'm travelling to Ocean city Maryland in june till sept... Been searching for crags and gyms on the net but can seem to find anything good... the closest gym seems to be 3hrs away while the closest crag is 4 and a half hrs from where i will be staying.

Anyone climbed closer to then that to OC?

Also looked into climbing in Delware but no luck. I rather have something closer so i can use it more often rather then becoming weak during the 3 months!

Im into all types of climbing, bouldering and trad so whatevers around ill do.

Thanks in advance!
Kian

Delaware rock gym is 110 miles...

You are in a bad location for access to climbing!

I know this hence my post!

Anything will do a stray boulder, traverse crag or even a school gym or something

There is no real rock anywhere near OC. I was there a month ago and noticed one of the big tourist-trap go-cart tracks was advertising a climbing wall. Sadly that's probably the best option you'll find.

Our sport climbing quarry in Birdsboro PA is 187 miles from you. You can camp for the weekend. We have over 120 lines ranging from 5.6 to 5.14. Let me know if you need information. On any given weekend there will be 50-60 people climbing, lots of very friendly regulars.

Hey Kian,

There's decent bouldering at Northwest Branch in Silver Spring (~140 miles, less than 3 hrs); check out http://Robinclose.blogspot.com/

Rocks State Park offers some good trad, topropes upwards of 80' & a few boulders (~160 miles, just over 3 hrs).

If you need a partner, hit me up.

Thanks everyone, these are all possiblities for weekend or week trips which i will look into.

Interested in what the locals do? any area like a park or beach where there might be a boulder, quarry or a crag which mightnt be used for climbing that maybe could be developed?

I was wondering if there was anythihng at all more local to train and keep the fingers strong. I usually train 3/4 days a week for 2/3 hours so i would really need something closer. Otheriwse ill be hanging from door frames for the summer!

Thanks again lads
Kian

No such luck, locals in OC are not climbers, and climbers in OC are out of luck. There's a climbing wall for kids on the boardwalk, and lots of buildings with balconies. The closest really decent trad crags are Seneca Rock and the Gunks, about six hour drives west or north. If you feel like visiting Washington D.C. there are bouldering/single pitch areas along the Potomac River, Carderock and Great Falls.
Good luck.

Buy a hang board, put it up somewhere. When you leave, take it down, patch the holes and sell the thing on Craigslist.

You could do what I did when I had foot surgery on both feet and couldn't climb for 6 months...

I hired a personal trainer and worked on overall, total body strength and conditioning. It worked wonders, when I resumed climbing, I was better than when I was forced to quit. It really did help a lot. In fact, I still go 1x per week and it's been almost 1.5 years since the surgery. There are plenty of gyms down there, you can find a personal trainer in a gym. For Finger and forearm strength I roll a 45 pound weight down my fingers to the tips (as far as I can get without dropping it) and then roll it back up. I do 60 reps (sets of 15).

PM me when you are ready to hit Birdsboro. I can hook you up. You can camp there for the weekend, it's primitive (we have a porta potty, no running water) but it's doable.

Hey Kianb, I'm stuck on the eastern shore as well. Great for the slackliner in me; so many docking pilons for slacklining over the bay. Horrible for the climber in me. Send me a message. I've got a rope and spare trad rack, hoping to get into more trad.

That area is flat, bro. I'm a Maryland native* and pretty familiar with OC. The Eastern Sea board just doesn't have much elevation change.

But it might be time to balance yourself out so you can become a superhero. Rest your tendons for a summer: mountain sports only begin with climbing.

Fuck driving 100+ miles for mediocre-at-best climbing. Ever heard of power kites?

You're gonna have a fun summer!

He bailed marrying me. It's okay, I'll be fine. But the old friends aren't coming back and the new life is heading right in the same direction. If you could help me get him back that'd be great.
