I wouldn't really consider myself a "new" climber but i thought this subject may be usefull to someone who is.

I bought a new mammut superdry 9.8 mm rope at my local out door store. and every time i use it I seem to get more spaghetti evan after flaking it out countless times. this rope has been used on mabey 10 weekend trips so far this season and seems to get worse every time. this last weekend the spaghetti was so bad it took 2 ppl to untangle it while i was belaying my wife down.

i tied it to a tree and stretched it out over and over again until i got blisters on my hands then i went to coil it back up and it still had some kinks in it!!!

Any ideas on what to do ?
anyone eles have this problem?

How are you flaking it out? If you use a rope tarp, tie the end down, and then flake it over the tarp, it should just stay nicely.

You probably uncoiled it incorrectly when you first got it. The easiest way to remove the twisting is the do a few full length rappels on it

Yeah thats exactly what i do. this is my 3rd rope over the last few years and i have never had one do anything close to what this one is doing,its just a nightmear. i plan to wash it with my rope wash tonight and try to let it dry as flat as possible and see what that dose.

To get the kinks out stand at the top of a cliff and hold on to one end of the rope and let the rope hang in the air, shake the rope as you pull it back up. If the cliff isn't tall enough hold it in the middle, shake the rope as you pull it up. Restack it from just one end. Don't coil in a circle.

Not saying this is going to cure your problem but what I have had to do in the past when a cliff was not avaiable. Go to a local soccer / football field drape your rope on the ground and take it for a walk. Once around the posts should do it twice to be sure. Use a rope bag in case it is your method of coiling . Has worked for me Make sur ethe grass is dry and void of mud.

A couple tricks:

The best is to do the full length rap. However, if that isn't feasible;

take it out front. Tie one end to a lightpost, and flake it out it's whole length. Take your atc and biner, put it on the rope, and drag it the length of the rope. More than once if necessary.

Flaking. The big mistake I see with people flaking ropes is that they start with alternating ends. All that does is push the kinks down a few feet, then push them back. If you're going to do a few flakes, ALWAYS start flaking the same end.

It's kind of obvious, but if you do the full length rap to detangle it, do NOT do the rap with a fig 8 device or a munter hitch!
Use an ATC preferably.

someone told me once that climbing both ends of the rope (alternating which end on each climb) will help prevent this. I alternate climbing side because I'm superstitious, but it's worth a shot, right?
