I am going to be working in Invercargill for the next 6 months (until late April 2012). My wife and I climb (moderate routes) and we have a 3.5 year old son. We're looking for kid-tolerant climbing partners (preferably people who have their own kids) who don't mind taking a turn keeping an eye on the little ones between their turns on the routes. I'll be working just half-time, and will get 3 weeks of vacation over the 6 months. We plan on trying to climb in the Queenstown/Wanaka area as much as we can. We're bringing a rope, draws, and a trad rack with us.

try www.queenstownclimbing.com
The club recently had a family snowshoe day and the club has a family trip Co Ordinator who might be able to put you in touch with some other families. email is queenstownclimbing(at)gmail.com

Wanaka has nice flat Paddocks at the base of some walls
There is good bouldering in Queenstown, with Flat fenced land.

You should Go to Milford and stay at homer hut (Car access). day walks for kids and for you Moirs mate-2 hrs walk in 8 pitches natural to top and back to hut by night in the most scenic place on earth!
Mountain biking in Invercargil OK. Queenstown biking is Awesome!
Surfings good Colac bay etc nice beach locations, fishing etc.

Nice! Thanks for the tip. Sounds like a great day out. This 8-pitch route you mentioned is called Moirs mate? There doesn't seem to be any info about it here on rockclimbing.com Is it in some sort of guidebook I can purchase?

Milford is the tourit village at Milford sound, Darran mountains, Fiordland. The NZAC (alpine club who own the hut) has a guide. There is a Cleddau valley sport climbing guide too. Nzac.org.nz sells the guides and if you click on Climbnz there is some info on climbing.
The NZ forum like this is called mojozone.co.nz

hi lensign,
we are a family with 3 years old kid, so we are in the same boat as you. Our experience level is probably the same (medium routes, by medium I mean something that is a Mt Cook 3+ grade). We also have a rope, draws, nuts, cams etc..
We are going to spend 2-3 weeks in New Zealand during Christmas/NYE.

My e-mail is dane@ixbt.com, feel free to write to me.
