Fabulous Las Vegas is in the 60s right now - fabulous climbing weather and hundreds of couchsurf hosts if you're looking to stay very cheaply.

Smith can be awesome in December but it can also be rained/snowed out. It is a great winter destination if you are flexible with dates but less than ideal if you are committing to a specific date a month out. I would second everyone else's suggestion of Red Rocks, Potrero, or J-Tree unless you can plan your trip with a short term weather forecast.

El Potrero Chico. Once you've paid for your flight everything else, camping, food, beer, is cheap and you don't need a vehicle to get around.

I realize you have a very vested interest but continuing to ignore the 800 pound gorilla is not doing anyone any favors - least of all yourself. Some of the more vocal e-climbing denizens have painted very different pictures of current conditions. Gail (Pollyanna) says everything is just hunky dory -good as ever - ladeda (did you feed her some cool-aid?) Crimpy (Eeyore) paints the pictures of a ghost town with a heavy pseudo military presence and out of control locals. I imagine the real truth is somewhere in between. But here are a couple of yes/no questions. Eloborate with your answers if you must but start with a yse or no. 1. Is there an increased (compared to 5 years ago) military presence? Do they have a permanent presence in the Potrero? 2. Has there been violence in Hildago? 3. Is there a cartel presence in Hildago?

To those of you who have suggested Joshua Tree as a sport climbing destination--what have you been smoking? Curt

Here's the answers to your questions. 1. There is a large army base about half-way between Hidalgo and the airport (about 20 miles) so there has always been an army presence, but yes, they are much more visible now patrolling the area compared to five years ago. Those of us who live here appreciate that presence. 2. There has been only one violent incident and it happened just last Sunday. The army was pursuing some malos on the highway and they ducked into Hidalgo to try to lose them. Shots were fired and a local gentlemen was caught in the crossfire. 3. Until two weeks ago when they were arrested (right in front of my property) there was a group of Zetas living about 200 feet from me. They never caused any problems in the neighborhood. I would never encourage people to come on down if I thought it was too dangerous, regardless of the economic impact on the town. I knock on wood but I feel safer here right now than I would in Oakland.

j-tree is not a sport climbing "destination" but there are sport routes, and some bolted traditional routes. the vibe is good and there are plenty of gear plugging rope guns if you dont want to lead trad. there are not very many steep bolted routes though. red rocks is cool, but if I were going there I would MUCH rather climb big stuff. sport climbing the gallery does not shake a stick to cloud tower or epinephrine IMHO.
