Thanks for the effort and the list, I'll go through and make sure the users are disabled.

2 things need to be done:
1. finding a method of blocking the creation of fake profiles like those.
2. You'll need to create and run a search query through the users to be able to erase all the fake commercial accounts.

I looked at the users in the member directory, sorted by last seen, more than 9 out of 10 for December 5 are fake.

then I did a search by 3 number and found thousands!
127;128;229;230;231;410;411;511;512;513;614;615;616;716;717;718;819;820;821;921;922;923;924
those are the ones I quickly looked at that listed more than a thousand results that looked fake.

We're currently working on getting the situation under control, at first it seemed as though it was a few of these spammers here and there but they have increased dramatically recently and as such we have been forced to block hotmail accounts from registering (whether this will be temporary or permanent is yet to be decided, but we hope to be able to unblock them soon).

They are by-passing our captchas and validating processes, so we're currently working on ways to implement stronger user verification techniques on user signup and are in the process of getting rid of the thousands of registered spam users.

Just had a look at your captcha.

I am by no means an expert on that, but isnt that one of those that are easily broken?

While i do not really like the idea of using evil google for anything and everything, their recaptcha seems like a captcha solution that still works (unless you get cheap africans or asians to type them in for your "business").

heres an interesting and recent read on the subject:
http://www.h-online.com/...-bypass-1371934.html

Oh, and in case you are looking for other options, here is my solution for verifying new users:

Just collect a "database" of easy climbing questions and answers, or easy identifiable "climbing objects" (maybe you could "crowdsource" the creation of that database, by, i dont know, ask around in a big forum on the subject or something…).

So a new user would for example have to answer a question like
"Which of the following knots can you use to tie in with (click on the answer):
a) figure 8
b) clove hitch
c) hangmans knot"
Or
"

How are the things in the above photo called (click on the right answer):
a) snappers
b) linkomatics
c) carabiners"

You get the idea…

The problem:
that might filter out a lot of folks new to the sport, that come here with a genuine question. It might destupidize most new questions in the beginners forum, but still, the colateral might be rather high, so there would need to be some kind of system that still allows folks that answer wrong to post.

So maybe approve the first 2 or 10 posts by a mod?

climbing content -> no spammer, promote the user to full user
obvious spam -> kill the account
unclear -> observe further
no activity for a week -> send pm and ask for clarification. No reaction: kill account

Or give the first posts a colored background, and a header that asks users to "rate" the post as genuine, spam or unclear.

Thats never a good idea. Often times people come to a forum to get an answer to a urgent matter. These types of account creations require immediate access.

However those are mostly the kind of questions that wont get a straight answer anyways, and the only thing one hears from the person asking that urgent question is normally a short "U R all assholes! This site sucks, i am going to a real climbers website!!11!" somewhere on page 6 or 7 of the thread flamefest they created, so i doubt that this is a huge loss.

But nevertheless it would add a huge workload on the mods, so i'd rather let the masses watch those first posts.
