Kid-friendly rock climbing movies?

I'm gathering some prizes for an indoor climbing competition that I'm hosting for kids from 6-14 years old, and I'm looking into getting some climbing movies. More of the Big Up variety and less of the Hollywood variety if possible. Problem is, these movies tend to be unrated so I don't really have any way of knowing how much bloody injury (cuts, flappers, etc.), cursing or otherwise not-so-kid-friendly antics are going on in a movie. Basically, the fewer angry parents I get, the better.

Any suggestions?

Two DVDs I enjoyed were front range freaks and return to sender, both made by the same folks. There were some light hearted moments in both - the climbing dogs and Timmy ONeil doing stupid stuff. I don't think there were any too scary or gruesome bits in either. I can't remember about bad language, but again don't think there was anything too bad. Too be honest I can't recall too bad language in any of the climbing DVDs I have seen and we have all the dosage and masters of stone ones.

The reel rock films are pretty decent. Maybe a couple have some swear words but I know that the Obe and Ashima (2011), the hulk origins (2010) and a few other clips are clean.

I dunno, I watch the videos with all the awful words with my son.

I don't recall hearing anything too bad in Progression or King Lines but it's been a while.

Every climbing video is going to have some foul language but not a ton.

I have seen more than anybody I know. I would have to guess that I have seen at least 30 if not 40.

Forgive me for extrapolating based on my experience of seeing every single climbing movie I have ever even heard of.

"Moving Over Stone"

It's been a while (late 80's, early 90's), but I believe totally clean. With Lynn Hill, Peter Croft, Doug Robinson, Bobbi Bensman, Ron Kauk, et al.

Yeah. If the kids are calling themselves climbers, then they and their parents need to *HARDEN THE FUCK UP!*

There is a huge difference between blood and violence, most parents wouldn't have an issue with the kind of blood a climbing video might have. A little honestly about consequences might be a refreshing change from the bloodless violence that gets only a PG rating in movies.

Most climbing videos will contain some brief swearing, so my kids don't watch any climbing vids until I've seen them and decide what sections they can watch.

A few biners and chalk bags might be a better idea.

If I remember correctly Obe cusses a lot in those flicks. Nothing more than kids hear in the gym though. However, he drops a few words that would definitely get you in trouble with some parents.

Whatever you do "DON'T SHOW THEM THE SKETCHY ANDY CLIPS"! Dude is hardcore in more ways than one.

Thanks for everyone's input.

I know that *generally* the bulk of those movies are pretty much in safe PG territory, but then you've got those 1-2 moments like Caldwell in Progression saying he "loves this shit" and I may end up hearing from an irritated parent later when one of my eight-year-old climbers starts saying he also "loves this shit". I know it sounds hypersensitive and it really probably isn't a big deal in the end, but the more I can avoid potential problems like that the better.

I would love to get the 2011 Reel Rock footage with Ashima for the kids since that's probably somebody more relatable at their age, but I don't think it's been released yet... or has it?

Perhaps the kids could benefit from the Self Coached Climber dvd.

If they can relate to Ashima's climbing skills then I want to sponsor them. Here is the footage. I wouldn't show this to someone else's child without the parents permission though. Obe drops some choice words and gestures right at the beginning.

LOL, I meant in terms of age. We do have some pretty good potential in our group though.

I ended up going with The Zanskar Odyssey. I don't remember there being anything too wonky in there, but I did a quick scan of the online cut just to be sure. I just gave the mom a heads up to have her kid look the other way when it's time for their chicken dinner.

BTW, thanks for the link. I edited out the first few seconds and will be sharing this with the kids. I think at her age Ashima would be to our climbing kids what guys like Sharma and Caldwell are to the grown-ups.

How has no one suggested "Take it to the Limit". The cinematography, the acting, the script - all of it is so bad its good. It would be a great "what not to do" film.

Route, music, weird shots of Jason Kehl on stilts in a graveyard, and copious "Im a nerdy filmmaker" jokes.
