Does anybody know of any programs in the denver area that work with "at risk youth" and incorporates outdoor activities like rockclimbing. I would be interested in volunteering but haven't been able to find any. Maybe there aren't any in this area. Well if anybody knows one way or the other please let me know.

Mountainmike pick up a copy of Rocky Mountain Sports, its a free and you an find it almost everywhere in the Denver area. Look in the back for climbing events.

I will check out the paper but I think that maybe I was unclear. I am looking for some sort of program that takes kids that have been abused, neglected or for some other reason are put in the "at risk" catagory, and takes them climbing or backpacking to help them out.

Mountainmike I know what you were talking about, Rocky Mountain Sports will usually cover something like an "At Risk Program"
You may contact some of the local schools also...it could be something that you could start up your self.
Also contact the local gyms and gear manufacturers to see if they would donate anything if you would start this kind of a program up. I have phone numbers for most of the local gyms and suppliers so if you need them let me know.

One other program woudl be the Boy Scouts. If you contact your local Scout office and let them know exactly what you are looking for, At-Risk youth Programs...not just the regular Scouting Programs...If they have something set up, they can direct you in the right direction.
The program should be..."The Learning for Life" program. Or they could have some sort of Crew that works directly with At-Risk youth

Hey Mike,
Not sure what's available in the Denver area, but programs like this exist almost everywhere, I just doubt they advertise themselves as climbing programs. It's not their priority. I have a good friend who worked for such a camp program in the Adirondacks (more camping and survival than climbing), and he said there were a lot of programs doing the same thing (in fact, he changed companies at one point). Anyway, my point is that these are probably more "camps" than they are "programs."
I'd actually contact the local school guidance counselor offices. I bet they'd know something. Shoot, even the local police or youth half-way house would know something.
