It seems to me that there is a lot of complaining about others opinions and reasons to be on the rock. It seems to me that either most people are climbing like crap and embarrassed to see others are better than themselves, or that there is a lack of respect for climbers that have trained hard enough to reach the higher levels of the grade scale.

Climbing was never about fun. All the fun you thought you were having was an illusion.

I hate the people at the gym. Posers. Even my partners irritate the hell out of me. Everybody else is ruining it for me.

Boy am I glad I'm at work.

kam_ill_eon is pretty accurate, scotia...

you should be careful. arrogance comes in many shapes and forms. some people are arrogant because they cant get over grades. others are arrogant enough to think they are better than those who are stuck on grades...

everyone climbs for their own reasons. the bottom line is, whatever motivates you to climb is what is fun about climbing. its different for me than it is for you...and on and on...that doesnt mean your reasons are better or more right...or more pure, just different...

A person who climbs for grades is not a climber.

I find each day climb I climb at a different level. I can have just a much fun on a 5.9 as on a 5.12a. They are both fun, it just depends on how I am feeling at the time, how often I have been climbing, the weather, what I have eaten ect...

(Just my two cents.)

I agree with several of the posters so far that grades should be used to measure your own progress not compare to others. And yes, don't take an innocent question as a challenge or as arrogance. Just climb. Worrying takes the fun out of it.

P.S. Climbing Sucks

Tell 'em that you climb well enough to have fun at it, which is all that really counts, isn't it? Don't get into a pissing match with those people, because they tend to be self-promotional types who are going to overstate their own skill level as much as it takes to one-better you.

Boulderingmadman, I don't think that I am better than anybody else. Don't judge so quickly.

Every time I meet a new climber that is my age (around 18) the first thing they ask is, "So what do you climb at?"

Hmm... could we have missed something? Maybe it's an age thing. I certainly can't speak for 18 year old climbers

a agree with drector. Most people want to put on a good first impression. so asking really dumb sounding questions would make them feel stupid, so they dont.

scotia--this is really funny..."Boulderingmadman, I don't think that I am better than anybody else. Don't judge so quickly. "... I shouldnt be so quick to judge...hmm...lets back up a second here...

" My point is that it's worthless to place so much stock on what grade a person climb's at. "
"This disturbs me because I think that first and foremost climbing should be about having fun, not how hard of a rating you can climb."

these statements are, so far, the most judgemental ones in the thread. you have jumped to various conclusions based merely on an innocent question. and when reasonable explanations for the question are given, you pretend that you know what these people are thinking when they ask such a question...

back off, little boy, you dont wanna do this...
