Ok, here is the deal. I'm going to India soon for business. While I'm there I've been offered a rappelling trip. Sounds fun right? Well, never climbed or rappelled in my life, I'm from Florida. But this looks great and I'd like to get into it on a regular basis. I am an avid hiker and know some knots and such (I was a Boy Scout).

I'm not saying that I don't trust my gracious hosts, but I'd like to pick up some of my own gear and do it here in the states first. After watching some YouTube (what could go wrong?) I think I should get the following items:

Sterling PowerCord Cordelette - 6mm (for my safety prussik)

Black Diamond Momentum AL Harness

Black Diamond ATC-XP Belay Device

Black Diamond GridLock Screwgate Carabiner

Ok, tell me why I am an idiot Wink

What else? What am I missing? What else can I do to ensure that I am taking the proper precautions?

Finally, I am in the Florida Panhandle. Where can I go to get some practice/training?

Rappelling trip? Sounds like something I just did (in Central America). Waterfall Rappelling in the rainforest. No climbing, unfortunatley. They're probably give you Figure 8 devices instead of ATCs. Make sure they have you on a secondary line. Rappelling with an 8 is fun. I found you can go a lot faster.

I doubt they'll let you use your own gear. And if you're an Ultra-Noob you might want to trust your hopefully qualified and proficient guides and let them instruct you on their gear and do it their way.

Thanks for the info, guys. I'm not planning on taking the gear over, just want enough info/experience to know when I (or my hosts) am doing something unsound/unsafe. Just an upgrade to my BS meter.

Before the YouTube infomatic/this forum session they could have told me to jump off this cliff with a wet noodle and a mattress tied on to my head and I wouldn't have known this was out of the ordinary. Now I know, and knowing is half the...nevermind.
