I love the bouldering in Leavenworth, particularly Icicle canyon. However, the best, most concentrated bouldering area in Washington is in Spokane, at Minnehaha Park. For a reference, check out John Sherman's book "Stone Crusade." Curt

i'd say drive the extra couple hours and go to smith rocks, or else you can be ultra hip and climb the outdoor boulder at UW

Curt-Was that you that use to hang out at the boulders flashing climbers, thus giving Minnehaha it's name?

wonderbread, No. That was me standing on the bridge over the Spokane River, adjacent to Minnehaha Park, calling out "Mark Twain." Curt

the best bouldering in Spokane could be Minnie, but Rocks of Sharon has some Great stuff too; Also there are 50 - 60 good to exellent problems in the Dishman Hills... but it seems people ignore this location! The best bouldering by far in WA that I've found are a few secret spots not far from Portland... Super overhanging with great holds and good landings. If I told you where I'd have to kill you though...

The best bouldering in Washington has not yet been developed... The boulder feild at the base of the "New Century Walls" area and the boulder feild on the flanks of Mt. Cultis are truly impressive rivaling even the big blocks of Yosemite. But the granite in this state is cursed with residing on the west side, this makes the demossing and keeping the boulders clean a huge problem. For sandstone types of bouldering the Mission Creek area, in Russman's neighborhood, and the Swauk Pinnacles areas are hard to beat. Index had a good bouldering area but it has fallen into obscurity. My dirt bike boys (who are constantly on the lookout for me) say the Taenum (sic?)Meadows holds some big nuggets, but they are fairly scattered. Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't there some good bouldering in the Minihaha neighborhood, or Metaline Falls? Good boulders are hiding everywhere. One of my all time favorites hides in the trees in a large circular planting in the middle of an intersection by my dad's house!?! Go forth and seek them out! Jeff

Sorry bro' I was just up near the New C' Wall area on Sunday, and had a really great day. I must've still been giddy... Doesn't matter anyway, if you can't hear the CD player in the truck from the boulders most lazy-ass climbers won't even venture there. So far you and one of "the Matts" has express any interest in going to the New Century Walls, and I promoted the Cultis stuff hard at the gym and just got "the look" from the hardcore boulder guys... if you can't boulder V7... somehow they assumed I couldn't recognize sick boulders either. I can shout from the rooftops and nobody will listen! Jeff

there are a few good boulders up at rattle snake lake. its the next exit past north bend on I-90 going east. But you have to go there in the winter because thats when the lake dries up and reveals them to their full splender. in the summer the snow melts and fills in the lake. I hear you Krusty. In the mid-eighties some friends and I explored the areas mostly around Zekes and a bit around what I believe you call the New Century/Picasso Walls. There are so many boulders in the area that someday it will surely become well known as the best bouldering in the NW. If my memory serves me correctly the potential even puts to shame the boulders at the base of the Grand Wall. It was hard a sell to get anyone to ever go there esp. since 15 years ago bouldering wasn't as popular as it is now. Honestly, I thought that there were even some leadable routes since some of the boulders were really big. Driving to Index a couple weeks ago I was surprised to see how the current logging activity has revealed some of the boulders (think the size of small houses) at the base of Zekes Walls. Even more surprising was getting a phone call out of the blue last Sunday asking me about bouldering in the area. Maybe you won't have those boulders to yourself very much longer. Just past Skykomish if you look to the north a boulder field is visible near the top of a ridge. The right margin of the boulder field has a long cliff about 75'-100' high on its edge. Roads get you to within a couple hour hike of the place but if a trail was established this could be reduced. The rock is grainy but if you're bored and enjoy bushwacking it might be worth exploring. Certainly not as good as the stuff lower down the valley. This area is more for exploring than climbing. The Skyline Slabs up at the summit are pretty good. Most of the good bouldering isn't on top of the ridge but rather below it in a large talus field. Mostly bad landings. The ridge, however, does have some fun climbs on great granite that require a rack. Views are amazing and the rock is really good. The hike in is about an hour. Excellent spot.

As far as what i have heard about Zekes boulder field is that it is an area about 4 square miles with an excess of about 200 boulders. I heard this information from a friend of the person who found the boulderfield. So far there is rumored to be about 50 or more routes that they have already cleaned. Supposidly the loggers are asking that all climbers stay out of the area until logging operations are finished then it will be open for use. If climbers continue to enter the area it could be closed to everyone for a long long time, so try to research that before you decide to go up there and get caught for tresspassing. I heard this info about four months ago, for all the good that it is worth. As far as all of the other posts about zekes boulderfield they are accurate. Can't wait to get some FAs!!

Best bouldering in Washington state is in the Okanogan. Hands down, it's not even close. But all those redneck hillbillies up there like to go all "deliverance" on Prana-clad beanie wearing boom box crankin punks so be forewarned.

there are some spots along the snake river that are nice, but....there arent many though. Plus in the summer, oooh it feels nice to cool off in the river after being on the hot rock all day.
