I've always wanted to get into climbing but never knew where to start. Now my 5 year old son is really excited about learning to climb as well (and surf but that's another story) so here I am trying to figure my way out. I live in the High Desert of California (Victorville, Apple Valley, Hesperia, Barstow, etc) and have googled for kids climbing lessons and events but haven't found much. Anyone have any good resources for beginners, adults and kids alike? Thanks!

Look here to locate a climbing gym near you: http://www.indoorclimbing.com/worldgyms.html Call that gym, and ask them. They will explain to you what you need to try climbing for the first time (not much, they have rental gear, and will provide a belayer). After you try it, and decide that you like it, there are probably classes at the gym, both for adults and kids. And there is probably a kid's climbing team.

Carleen - You are not far from Joshua Tree (though it is closed due to the govt shut down right now), and that is a great place to climb. There are several guide services, and lots of routes for climbers of all ability levels. http://www.cliffhangerguides.com/ http://www.joshuatreerockclimbing.com/ http://vertical-adventures.com/ There is climbing quite close to you as well, and perhaps some of these guide services can suggest someone closer to you, but Joshua Tree would be a great place to get started.
