Most of what goes on aside of the competition is unmentionable. It truly is a big party. I think I saw someone recently describe it as the "Woodstock" of climbing. Pretty accurate.

Bring your piggy bank -- the gear manufacturers show up with some absolutely smokin' deals. Arrive early onn Friday for the best shot at the goods. Most reps bring cosmetic blems, overstock items, and "like new" returned items to the comp and sell them dirt cheap.

Great people, great climbing, great music (some really decent bands have played the last few years), and a great party make for some fantastic memories. Or leaves you trying to remember what happened.

I have heard the PBC described as a 3-day Woodstock for climbers.

And if you haven’t gone, I suggest you do!

Camping out in the dirt…lounging around in the afternoon sun…enjoying friends…drinking…food…music…discount gear and clothing…oh yeah, include the bouldering contest and the evening dyno comp.

Of course there is also the draw of watching incredible climbers such as Sharma, Caldwell, Rodden, etc.

A couple of folks from our local gym showed up and competed. It was a lot of fun cheering them on.

Going to do my best to get out there again this year.

Hope to see ya there!

~Hanger

Last year, while watching Sharma fail on what should have been a “gimme” dyno, the DJ looks over at Chris and says, “Chris… Phoenix wants to know…What the Hell!?!…What the Hell Chris!?!” Pretty funny at the time.

I was suposed to go last year but.....I wont get into that. I AM going this year and it is going to be sweet. Queen Creek, where PBC is held, is the main site i go to, and seeing profecional climbers doing routes I will see all the time, but not always ascended will be sweet.

*went the PBC's web page and is now getting ancious in his seat!

the same big names are usually there year after year, so check the PBC results from previous years to get a good idea. Jim Waugh, the comp organizer, usually makes sure that Sharma comes to the comp and has a great time. I think that was the highlight for me at the first comp I went to, talking to Chris Sharma. He is really nice. Actually all of the top climbers attending the comp are great and willing to talk to everyone who comes up to them. Sometimes the sponsors will have them signing autographs on posters at their booths.

Other activities? They have a tug-o-war, a dyno comp, and way too much booze. ;)

What users are just showing up this year?
What users are volenteering this year? <-- Me

I am guessing that climbingpride brought this back up after seeing the banner running on our site or the new featured website.

I have struck a deal (al-be-it small this year) with Jim for a small sponsership role and we will do some promo for them.

Keep checking the Climbing Event listed on the Front Page as we get closer to see what is going on.

They will be sending me info and I will post it and keep all going. Hopefully next year, we can get a much better presence from RC.com.

Keep up the info and DAMN, I wish I go get there from here.

My girlfriend and I will be there, neither competing (convert that entrance fee into Canadian funds and it takes a couple of weeks off our roadtrip) but we'll have cameras and a now-ghetto Hi-8 video camera which will hopefull be transfered to digital and uploaded to the web when we get back from our roadtrip a few months later.

Find Ivan and Erica and we'll be somewhere around there :P

Just a couple updates..
All areas west of Magma Mine Road will be OFF for the 20th PBC starting on Saturday, March 29.

Dogs and other pets will NOT be allowed in the vending/stage area or contest site this year. They are allowed in camp sites as long as they are leashed and attended.

Please visit the PBC site. The comp may start 1/2 hour earlier!

The contest is going to be bigger and better this year. Over 60 booths!
I have put up 150+ new problems. I will be putting up a little slide show of many of the new problems in the next couple of weeks.

Here is last years comp... http://www.drtopo.com/flash/pbc.html

Tired of being shut down on a boulder problem near the top becaue you are so tired from doing the starting moves 20 times?

Things will be different for the Expert Category! :D

We are going to allow Expert competitors to work problems from any point on the problem.

Of course you will only get credit for the problem when you complete it from the start.

It should make for a lot more sends!

Unfortunately, since there are no judges for the age group category, the age groupers will ONLY be able to try the problem from the starting handholds. No working of the problems.

It appears that due to the lack of entries in the Local Mens and Womens categories, there will be no expert category for them.

The Expert category will still be in for the Non-Local men and women's.

So you're gonna take away the sport climber's advantage, cool, that's a good way to level the playing field. That endurance stuff is way over-rated anyway...

Hangdogging on boulder problems? At the PBC? Wow...

Jim changed his mind and is waiting until Tues to decide whether the Local Mens expert category will be in or out. .

If he gets a few more people he will keep it. You better do it online though. He probably won't get them in time if you send it snail mail.

Jim posted this on his web site,

"PBC Pre - Registration Has Ended !!!
04-15-2003

The PBC Pre-Registration is now closed (both Mail-In and On-Line). We do have a few slots left that we are saving for On-Site Registration that begins Friday, April 25, at 12 Noon. It is important to note that the PBC has a large number of "No Shows" every year. We will sell those slots as well but not until April 26, Saturday morning, just before the actual competition begins.

Thanks to all!!!"

For all those who were unable to take advantage of the pre-registration.... There will be some spots available on Friday.
The registration tent opens and 12. You might want to get there early to get in line.
