Anyone have any tips on rigging a slackline so that it doesn't hurt the tree to which it's anchored? Personally, I've seen either cardboard or small blocks of wood (a pain to set up) placed between the tree & webbing. Any other suggestions?

Thats a tuff one. There are a hundred ways to do it, but not too many great ways.
Try a peice of pipe insulation, like one would use to pad a surfboard rack. Just slip it over the webbing that goes around the tree. This stuff wears out, so keep an eye on it.
I've also used an edge protector (see Fish products site) made of the same vinyl that haulbags are made of. It slips over the webbing and offers a bombproof barrier between the webbing and the tree. It also allows the webbing to do its little "slide up & down" thing without causing tree damage.

For a good temporary solution I took some palm fronds and wrapped them around the tree, then wrapped the webbing around that. This was in mexico so finding the palm fronds was no problem.
You could also take a length of garden hose and cut it so it can lie open then set it between the webbing and tree.
Jackets work too, util it gets chilly out!
