heehee...bouldering can be cheaper...pad can cost less than a rope...and takes less time to set up...and here around st louis...there is somewhat of a shortage of walls large enough to climb...but bouldering is reasonably plentiful

what a pointless conversation. what is this, boldering.com? anyway, i've been restricted to bouldering since i know only a few people with gear and time to go be my climbing partner... I have to say, leading (i've only lead 2x) is much more of a rush than bouldering. top roping is ok. "real" climbing and bouldering have their respective positive aspects: bouldering: allows more freedom to try moves and climb at absolute limit. is more of a pure form of climbing. can be done alone. is really easy to completely lose oneself in...i can boulder all day, until i can't find any more routes that i can do. You can get totally lost in the process of figuring out moves. "real" climbing: is more of a technical challenge. is scarier (unless you do highball bouldering). requires more endurance. requires more gear. requires more than one person. is more of a rush. all forms of climbing are equally fun, however i enjoy the purity and lack of distraction associated with bouldering. When climbing, you get distracted by fear and equipment (well at least i do) but bouldering kinda frees you up. OH YEAH, TELL YOUR BOSS TO "TAKE THIS JOB AND SHOVE IT." *all forms of climbing are equally fun, however i enjoy the purity and lack of distraction associated with bouldering. When climbing, you get distracted by fear and equipment (well at least i do) but bouldering kinda frees you up.* I'm the opposite, I'm way inhibited and distracted bouldering because I'm scared I'm gonna sprain an ankle or break something, but on real climbs I feel safe because of the rope. Be careful, if you boulder too much in your formative years you may never get over your fear of real climbing... Is this a killer thread or what? Almost makes me wanna pay my ISP bill...

Bouldering is sort of like sex; if it sucks, then you're probably just not doing it right!

dupree's comment was best!!! If your boss thinks bouldering sucks, it's probably cause he's too afraid or too weak to really do it. I didn't like bouldering either when I could only climb 5.9!!!

Bouldering does suck...for me. Having had broken ankles (from being bad at other sports) and questionable knees from the beginning, there is nothing that I like less than the lower body stresses associated with bouldering. And yeah, as I whip past 30 ys old, it is nice to be able to climb 5.10 and still accomplish something...like multipitch trad, for example, rather than bouldering V minus 1. Don't mind watching bouldering, tho, or spotting the occasional hottie!

picture this...long deadpoint to tiny, half-pad, three-finger crimp, 25 ft off the deck. bad spotter (sorry baby :) ), and you arent even sure if the hold is that good, let alone if you'll stick it... yup...boulderers are pusseys...no doubt. you definately need to clip into a rope to be a real climber... disclaimer--if you cant taste the sarcasm in this post, you need to frequent boldering.com a little more often to up the experience level...:D

i think bouldering is fun when u cant go out to the crag. it does become a bit to much when u dont have proper landing or some one to spot
