Bump! I think this is a pretty cool article. Nobody else finds this stuff interesting enough to ask questions? Eg. how the particulars fit together...

Is this the type of system we see Dan Osman using in "Masters of Stone IV?" A.W.

If I had the skills I would give rope jumping a try. But I don't have the knowledge to set/rig the needed system. Two very experianced people reccomended that I not try to rig a jumping system. This is where my plan to jump stopped. When two people I have lots of respect for tell me not to do it, I listen. From what I understand Dano was the best at this. He is dead, that really makes a statement!

While I am not saying that what DanO did was safe, I also think some of the other things that he did or we as climbers do were/are more unsafe that rope jumping. His death was from a faulty judgment call (how or why is not the point) How many other climber solo stuff that is close to their limits, use booty gear when they should'nt, forget to tie in at after threading the anchors? Just because somebody died doing something does not neccessarily mean that no one else should do it. If that were the case then we all would not be clinbing right now. And hey, when you think about it, his setups were a lot safer and secure that some of our topropes. How many jumps did he do untill something happened. who knows. There are the freak accidents in skydiving. That does not stop peoplefrom doing it. I have to agree. He was in there with the best (I think THE best but that is just me ) He made a bad call. But don't let that taint your view of his sport or abilities. Now just don't go sueing me when you do a 600 foot jump and srew up and kill yourself.

Yep rope jumping is great! (read *sarchasm*) A local killed himself doing this in this area at what could have been the premiere climbing area in the greater Sacramento Area. The area was promptly shut down to all clmbing related activities, and this was almost 15 years ago. We are STILL fighting to get the place opened back up to climbers and we are running into hard core resistance from the land managers because of their lack of understanding that Rope Jumping really has nothing in common other than the unfortunate circumstance of sharing similar and in many cases the same type of gear used. So go ahead, promote rope jumping, but don't be surpised when someone goes splat, and then the local land manager kills climbing access for good. Just curious, but which area is this you speak of? I used to live up that way and wasn't aware of very many areas to climb in the Sacramento area itself.

I agree that Rope Jumping is super dangerous and risky to say the least. I also know that I do not have half of the knowledge I would need to set up a "Safe" system. But come on, that HAS TO BE A BLAST!!! I'd love to say I would do it one day, but I know I won't... but I sure would like to.

Ha! Good one Ammon! Roughster, I am not ‘promoting’ rope jumping by any means. I am simply answering questions and I did state a rather obvious disclaimer. If someone still wants to set up a rope jump, then that is their decision. Ever heard of Darwin? (My comment above has nothing to do with Dano.) ------- Roughster, your comment reminds me of the anti-gun fanatics that want to make all firearms illegal. Guns don’t kill people; people kill people. We are all responsible for our own actions. As far as the overzealous land managers, that is another debate. [ This Message was edited by: copperhead on 2003-02-13 08:48 ]

I just saw the dan osman special in Masters of Stone V. WOW! That guy was sick! I love it! He even set up small ropejumping things off of trees and stuff. Then that one off the bridge! AHH man! He was awsome! I just wondered why he just did not base jump or bungie.

It's only dangerous is you do it. So simple, don't do it, and you won't die doing it.
