What is that gets you to a gym beside the fact that they have a wall with holds on it and you don't? Is there something you prefer like a place that offers climbing classes or yoga? Is it because the best climbers go there? Is it the service? What would make a gym an attractive option in the summer?

The obvious; good problems/routes , and if it's summer then ventilation matters too. The maybe not so obvious; the 'vibe' matters... starts with the service of course, but also means who goes there - if it's all bumblies then that's not really inspiring, and if it's only hardcore then you can feel out of place if the people aren't welcoming... I'd rather be outdoors in summer, but if I have to go to the gym, then I normally choose the one that's the most fun - and that means good problems and a friendly crowd ... anybody else? is it the problems/routes or the people?

I'd say legal closure, armed gaurds, and 24/7 surveilance of every climbing or hiking area within 200 miles of home. Summer just isn't the time for gyms. Advertising a bit may get non-climbers to come though. I'm guessing they would want classes and such for people who have never climbed before and are looking to get into it, or to just take their kids out for a night of fun.

Five minutes from home. Lots of bouldering. Good climbs. No nooobies, boyscout troops, birthday parties, or, worst of all, spraylords. Oh, and free. Then I'd be there every day.

I started climbing about two month ago. I like the gym because I took a class there to get started. It was also nice because the gym gave me a free pass for a week. I liked going there because I could meet friendly people who knew what they were talking about. Now the snow is mostly melted and I own my own gear I'm outside any chance I get. After seeing the great outdoors I will not go to a gym unless there is a weather emergancy and im jonesen for a climb.

I'll second that, There's nothing better than sending a wicked campus problem with your lats bulging and hot chicks watching. They'll probably think your just a show-off but truly their impressed and somewhat turned on. WAKE UP MAN, WAKE UP!!!

well it helps that i work at a gym, so that gets me to go there. but seriously it's the quality of the routes/problems and the atmosphere. one of the coolest gyms i've been to was a small room in the back of a climbing shop in some podunk town that happened to have really good problems and a positive crowd. peace.

I've always fantasized about a laundromat/climbing gym. I mean, what better way is there to pass the time while waiting for your laundry to finish? Lord knows how many times I've forgone doing laundry to go climbing (I'm wearing a pair of pungent "recycled" socks as I type this). Besides, think how nice the gym will smell with the scent of fabric softener perfuming the air! And since this is my fantasy, bikini-clad babes are also draped all over the vibrating machinery...offering massages...and cold beers...and slow-cooked ribs smothered in hot sauce...wait, what are we talking about again?

I work in a gym and the main concern anyone should have is first off space. The guys putting up the routes should know what the hell they're doing, because if you have someone who doesn't know s*it about climbing the gym is gonna suck. Also, a bouldering area reaaaalllllyyy adds to any gym's list of goodies.

Some good cracks. Some of hand, OW, chimney sized--bombay chimneys in gyms are cool. In fact up to full-body-stem sized chimneys can by created by just strategically positioning the walls. Don't bother with finger-sized cracks though. Oh, and some workout equipment would be good.

Gyms are great to use through the work week when your closest climbing crag is 100 miles away.
