Can anyone recommend me a good lightweight wind proof top that can pack down as small as possible and is fairly robust?

Golight stuff is way cool, but you may not be able to get it in your neck of the Great North Woods. I own a Lowe Alpine triple point jacket that I scammed for $50 that squeezes down to about 1.5 fist size, a Patagucci top (see my profile pic) that squeezes to fist size and a Trango rain/bail suit that squeezes to the size of a large can of soup including fleece hat and gloves.

Marmot makes a really nice windshirt for about $100. I have an EMS one that I have been using for about 3 years now and it cost $69. It came with a light DWR finish on it but after a year or so it needed be retreated. Overall it is a great jacket; lightweight, warm, durable, and reasonable priced.

Scratch another notch for the EMS Windshear jacket. It is a most capable base layer, well refined and packs real small, all while drying quickly and repelling light rain with ease.

The Mountain Hardware Transition Long Sleeve Zip T is one bad ass garment. It's a little less breathable than some of the other softshell tops out there, but if you specifically want the Windstopper material, this is perfect. It's low bulk and packs down small, and is absolutely bomber durable. http://www.mountainhardwear.com/ A guy I climb with has one and is extremely happy with it, and I have gear envy every time he breaks it out.
