If you have been there please tell hw you liked it and disliked it. And I f ou took a course there. I'm thinking about going there, but they seem to be on the hefty side, 55 American dollars, and kinda strict. And if you know any place in Massachusetts or Rhode Island that is good, and cheaper please feel free to tell me. Thanks, Fawn

I've been to the BRG. I brought beginners with me and they weren't allowed to climb without taking a class that cost something like $50 (I can't remember for sure, it was a few years ago). $50 to learn how to belay and tie in is highway robbery. I went back by myself a few weeks later. I was still just starting out, climbing 5.6's and under, and I got the 'here's another gumby' vibe from the people that worked there. I haven't gone back and I will not. The gym itself was quite nice but I don't care how nice the gym is if the people are asses. I climb at the Rhode Island Rock Gym. The people there are extremely nice and there's a very relaxed atmosphere. The gym is small but they have some great routes and a super-cool bouldering cave. Check 'em out online www.rhodeislandrockgym.com Are you in the Boston area?? I'm always looking for a new climbing buddy...I live in the Jamaica Plain area and I usually go to the RIRG once a week. Happy jumaring, jj

Well it would be worth it if they went over all that. Too bad it's freezing out, I'd take you out and show you all that stuff for free. Things may very well have changed since I went there. After all, it was 2 years ago. Happy jumaring, jj

Boulder Morty's in NH isn't too far from Boston and it's a great place. Even has an artificial ice wall and you can rent crampons/tools. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Mill City Rock Gym is in Lowell, MA . . a lot smaller and it seemed kinda dark & dingy, with raggedy furniture scattered around. I didn't climb there, just stopped by to check it out. I would climb there though, just didn't have time. There's also Carabiner's Indoor Climbing in New Bedford, but I haven't been there, just saw a link to it on the net. I tried to climb at the Boston Rock gym last time I was in MA, but we got there an hour before they closed & the person we talked to didn't really want to give us the belay test and let us climb. They were in a hurry to shut the place down and go home, I guess.

I've climbed at Mill City. 'Twas alright. I got lost trying to find the bloody place though. Carabiner's isn't open yet. I've heard that the ownership of the place has changed hands several times while the place was still being built. As far as I know it's still not finished. Gonna be a sweet place when it's done though. Happy jumaring, jj

I tried to take Karen's brother and sister-in-law there to just TR. They'd never climbed before, so Karen and I would do all the belaying. But they said they had to pay for a class regardless. Those people are greedy, and I even told them so as Karen was pulling me out the door before I started to knock over displays. Guess I over reacted. My opinion... I have been to Boston Rock Gym and have taken the beginner course. The course is a waste of money, if you already know how to tie a figure eight and belay. I went and they said that you have to pass a test before you can climb. The test is easy and most of the people that climb there are cool, it just seems that some of the people that work there have an attitude. I have been to Boulder Morty's and I think that it is a wonderful gym, but it is a little to far away, so I suck it up and go to Boston Rock Gym. Boston Rock Gym is nice once you get past the people that work there. I am going to change my opinion on BRG. I have been climbing there for the last couple of weeks and the people that work there are great, I have been asked by a number of the staff to Lincoln Woods, and also have been getting technique tips from a number of member and staff. My sister lives in the boston area and i was thinking about taking her to a rock gym in the area. After reading what you guys have said up there, i don't know if i want to take her to that gym. I will have to think about it. Are there any more gyms in the Boston area? *Anna*

check out mill city rock gym, i work there and will admit that it isn't as state of the art as most gyms or have fancy featured walls but the routes are killer and if you go alone the owner would offer to give you a belay if you needed one, including many others.............about it being dank and dirty.....dirty i can see but it is water tight no dankness.........ask for jay if you go there i will hook you up. jay

It's a nice place to climb, if a bit steep. I had the same problem regarding the class. They make you take a test to be able to climb or take the class. There is nothing you can't learn from a friend that knows how to belay. You have to tie a figure 8, finished off with a fisherman's. You have to put on a harness by yourself (correctly of course), and you have to belay a friend/volunteer as he climbs and takes a fall. That's it. Happy climbing

hey Jay, I didn't say Mill City was dank & dirty, I said it was dark & dingy But dark & dingy with cool people working there is much better than shiny and new with butthead staff. I'll probably climb there next time I'm in MA because my best friend lives right down the street.
