I am planing a trip to the Lone Peak Cirque. Does any one know what the route conditions and snow levels are? Will crampons and axe be needed< And will I be sleeping in a snow field? Any input would be great, Thanks, John

The Open Book and The Lowe Route are on the tick list. Depends on Snow and Ice conditions

Are you really going to go up there this soon? If you do you should certainly bring AT LEAST a walking axe for the approach to the routes once you are in the cirque. Actually probably not a bad idea for the descent too. You will be sleeping on snow. I might wait a month. (or two) Good Luck

I just flew by the cirque on Monday. It was pretty snowy. Recent thunderstorms for sure dropped more. Enjoy.

Hey, the skiin' should be great! Still looks like a ton of snow up there...

(ie, the approach, postholing, could be pretty sweaty...)

You might could tromp around some night after work around Farmington Peak to see how consolidated the snowpack is getting...and how much work it will be. Although, an approach with skis could be kinda fun.

If it were me, I'd take an ice axe...(especially for either descent back into the cirque). Lets see...snow shoes or ski's, boots, ski poles, hikin' shoes for the trail, rock shoes for the rock, rack, campin' gear...ouch, my back is startin' to hurt already just thinkin' about it...

Bit early for rock season up there, but hey, at least you don't have to worry about finding enough snow for water...

A bit more info on current snow levels in the Wasatch...

Camera below is aimed from Brighton kind of to the southwest. Elevations and aspect will be pretty typical for what you'll find in the Lone Peak Cirque.

http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/Saltlake/camera/single/Brighton.West.html

Here's east Greeley at Alta. Most of the routes at Lone Peak are above 10K feet in elevation... This aspect is very similar to the Lowe Route, I'm thinkin'.

http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/Saltlake/camera/single/Greeley.html

Here ya go with Jupitor Peak up at the Park City ski resort. As you can ski, uhh, I mean see, still penty of snow.

http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/Saltlake/camera/single/ParkCity.Jupiter.html

I think most of the climbing aspects for the routes you've listed are east through north. Temps in the morning are kinda nippy on these routes, in the summer...and...both routes don't see much early sun. Which, if your really crankin' the jam on that 5.8 first pitch of the Lowe Route, might be nice as your hand will be numb from the cold, and that rattley jam wont hurt so bad...(harder 5.8 than Satan's Corner in LCC? I think yep).

Be careful with weather up there. Lone Peak is a known lightening rod.

Yeee haaa!

I would like to thank all of you for the input. It really helps!!!! due to the large amount of gear required due to the snow pack we may shift focus to another objective. ie Sundial Peak. Any one been up there?

I thank all of you as well. I am going up to Lone Peak this Saturday and was going to check out a couple of routes in the cirque but have decided (thanks to your input) to just enjoy the Alpine Climb of Lone peak.
