I remeber reading on here about a kid who claimed he did a lot of climbs that he may actually not have. His motive behind this was to get sponsored. There were not really many details about this however. Does anybody happen to know the name of the person who did this, and what he said to have done.

i think it would work if you were slick. first you fool local tv, this would only take an IQ of 60 and be a good warm up if you were smarter. then you could trick the local papers into buying your crap, maybe a little harder because they may check facts, then do something to get national press attention. now being a poser you would not actually do the thing, but just stage an accident or something while "working" your 5.16 or whatever. then take all the clippings and some fake photos and start with small or backwards businesses that sell marginal products and don't really care too much. yikes, i think i am describing the american business model or something. anyway, i think you could do it. good luck, and give us free samples of whatever you rep.

Why would the TV or local newspaper care about a climber? Nobody gets sponsored by consulting popular media.

sponsorship does solely rely on sick hard sends anyway. sure you must be a competent climber pushing some numbers, but a lot of it is pesentation. what do you do for the communtity (FA's, volunteer work), and how you present yourself in the community. it is pretty easy to spot a poseur and i sure wouldn't want the gear he was using.

no clue about the dude of ill report though

everybody gets everywhere by using the media. they give you the credibility to become an expert climber for a ford ad. if you use them right you can even turn a cokehead into a president, or a healthy runner into a speed record holder.
