In reply to: A nut wedged straight down in a vertical crack may hold a ton if the pull is parallel to the cliff face but may pop easily under the action of any outward force. Such placements have to be viewed as marginal and can only be improved by rigging an opposing nut to hold the original piece down. Don't let anyone convince you that cams are somehow more reliable than nuts in this regard. I've seen plenty of cams blow, and since their primary mode of operation is friction, you have in general less information about how much of a load they can withstand.
