Hi Folks, I'm going to be in South Dakota at the end of June (28, 29, 30, maybe July 1st and 2nd if climbing is good) I'm flying into Rapid City from Phoenix, AZ and have never been to South Dakota. I'll have transportation, hardnes+belay device+shoes, and camping gear. No room for my sport gear... yet (I'm trying to pack as light as possible) I have sport climbing experience and be happy to follow on trad. Anyone experienced in South Dakota wanna show me around? Please e-mail hong101 at hotmail dot com Thanks, Hong

I don't live up there, nor am I up there that week! (close) If you have never been to the hills, your gonna love it! if you want sport stuff, check out the Rushmore area - A ton of sport routes. . there is on 5.7 Gossamer that isn't in Rushmore, I think it is in the Monster area (don't quote me) that you have to do - you'll see why when you find it! Also . . . navigation there is a bear - we go all the time, and we still need all 3 of our guide books and we try to triangulate the climb by all 3 descriptions! good luck man ~~~ enjoy it !

I've never been climbing out in the Black Hills, but I'm originally from Sioux Falls out in Eastern South Dakota. You will absolutely love the area and the people. I'll PM you an e-mail address of someone who can help you out. Have fun.

kid you not... quote from a person from South Dakota "You're not from around these parts are you?" (this with our tevas and gamicci shorts and climbing brand t-shirts- YA THINK!?) After relating some of us were from Southern California.... "My momma married a man from escondido. I guess you could tell, i don't like the bastard." WTF???? Where do they get these people? Still love the Needles of So Dakota. and the Tower anyways.

OH forgot to mention . . . if you like home made pie (Rhubarb) you gotta try the little pink pie place in Custer, SD. It is a little building on main street (west end of town) that has a victorian motif (pink and purple stripes) or if your into the adult beverages. . there is a funny little bar in Rochford (North? of Hill City) call the Moonshine Gulch Saloon. . . great people own it and it is a hell of an experience! So worth the drive (if your climbing in the hills)
