Mental problems (with apology to Monty Python)

The big problem with my climbing is the mental side of it.... and finger strength.

The two big problems with my climbing are the mental side of it and finger strength .... and footwork.

The three big problems with my climbing are the mental side of it, finger strength and footwork .... and flexibility.

Among my the problems with my climbing are the mental side of it, finger strength, footwork and flexibility.

Sorry - I just always get the urge to do the Spanish Inquisition sketch.

Anyway, my real point was to ask:

I have huge mental holes in my climbing (along with a lot of technique difficulties but my technique's getting better). For example:

I get fixated on one possible move and just can't see any other solutions that will get me where I want to go. So I'll keep trying this one way and keep falling and getting more and more frustrated (which is another problem). Then someone else will do the route / problem and will completely effortlessly do something different and much easier to get them past my crux.

I get a little tired and start to second guess myself. I'll get a decent hold with my right hand, start to move my left, panic, put my left hand back where it was and start looking for a better right hand placement. That or I'll just start pawing the rock, hoping that I'll magically find a bloody great bucket (or something).

Is the mental just something that comes with a lot of climbing like the skills and the physical ability apparantly will? Or is it something I have to consciously work on? If so, how?

I can see how spending a lot of time climbing will improve the physical side of climbing but I fear just getting physically better and still suffering from the same mental problems (although perhaps at a higher level).

Just a question...

trad? sport?

leading? toprope?

Ok, my small humble opinion...

I've only followed in trad.
so, no say on my part.

sportlead, I can and do have good mental block sometimes, and when i'm tired, I tend to downclimb, and TAKE.

I guess, I can say i usually ask to be left there to rest try more times, hense the word "problem"

If not finished or accomplished, I usually like to go back another time "fresh" and work thru it again.

It can be definitly crushing to the mindset...energy.
But when you do get thru it, the mental diminishes.

I wish you luck. Breathe...create your mantra..

mine:
come on' T you can do it...
come on...

(maybe a little cursing under my breath...talk to myself...grunt...)

It does help me, to KNOW i feel confident in my partner/belayer...say, ok, you got me?? then that is releif in itself...to pull hard and if...

well, if you get it...RIGHT ON!!

good luck in your search/ventures
and climb safe :)

Not the comfy chair!

At the moment, I only rockclimb top-roped and boulder - and in the gym since it's right near both the library (where I do most of my research and wish I was up a mountain) and work (where I sit on my ass and wish I was up a mountain).

Thanks for the links. Interesting stuff.

some people say i have them to but its really just when they read writing because its hard language to learn even if you come from here! it really not fair to say someone has mental problms when its not they fault because maybe they got hit on the head with a rock like in tose other posts about helmets. people say it to me and angrger gets my face redder when i hear it. i can climb pretty good climbs and that probable means i dont have mental problems anymore.

The more climbing you do, the more experiences you will have, thus the more solutions to problems will be at your disposal. Try bouldering. Ask "locals" for those problems that are tricky or technical. If you are bouldering try MANY different solutions. Make it a point to think of weird ways to do stuff, or do something different EVERY time. You KNOW your problem, now you just need to REMEMBER it when looking at the rock and not just focus on ONE solution!

I found myself doing just what you describe however I do believe that I have found my way through that barrier. Sport climbing was the thing that did it for me. The fall up a climb thing is good. Because you can fall in Sport climbing with relatively few consequences that enabled me to push my limits in relative safety. It gave me the opportunity to try lots of different ways of surmounting that impossibly difficult problem.

Lateral thinking is one way of achieving your goals on a micro level of thinking as well as the macro. Doing the same thing over and over and not learning from your mistakes is not where it is at.

solution for the first two problems: climb

for the third: concentrate on footwork, climb clabs

as for flexibility, start stretching.

I would suggest that to boost your confidence you attempt the first ascent of Uxbridge Road. It was tried may years ago, with disastrous results, but word has it that the council has done some repair work on the kerb, and the layback isn't as sketchy as it used to be.
