I am curious what the temperatures are like in july and august in Buttermilks and Joshua tree. Is it possible to climb harder problems or is it better to climb in autumn?

Both places are definantly winter destinations. That being said, spring and fall will definantly work as well. summers in both places will be, well... like climbing in any desert environment: brutally hot! Temps at both areas will soar way over 100 degrees. I would recomment waiting until at least October and no later than March. For example, my trip to Bishop this year will be during January. tim

sept. can be ok in jtree or bishop depending on temps, season generally starts in october. But march is far from the end of the season, you can generally climb in both places until sometime in may, depending on temps. This year socal stayed cool through may and we had great days at jtree until almost june 1!

Bishop is climbable year round (maybe so is J-Tree). The Buttermilks are climbable in the evenings (last 2 hours), due to the cold breezes coming out of the mountains -- plus it's at 6,000 ft. But they are NOT considered in season. Ditto w/ the tablelands which are much hotter right now. Mammoth (40 min N. of Bishop) is one of the best summer bouldering areas in the U.S. Rock Creek, Lake Mary, Bachar Boulders, Deadman's summit are all in season right now. All are different types of rock as well. Tuolumne is in season right now. If you wanna go south, I'd go to Black Mt. or the Tram (which is also huge and has seemingly endless summer bouldering). This is where the bishop climbers are heading right now to boulder, if they aren't plugging gear elsewhere in the Sierras. Everyone is in the mountains right now, not the happys, sads, or BM. There is also good, but scattered summer bouldering around Truckee as well (around Donner Summit -- white rock lake, saddle boulders, split rock, white lines, Grouse Slabs, etc.)

Choppie: Glad our ratings could boost your ego. What's your ranking now? did you break the NA top 100 yet? Just lemme know if you are in the area and feel the need to be skooled ;-) xo

i was in bishop in mid june. we climbed at the happys in the shade until noon. it was suprisingly pleasant in the shade. at noon we went to north lake where it was about 65. then mid afternoon, we wen to the buttermilk and had a very nice, cludy session. probably some of the best weather i've ever had the pleasure of climbing in. last season, i started going back to bishop in mid september and it was warm/hot in the sun, but worth it without chasing alot of shade. i may go earlier this year. check weather.com for bishop and subtract 10-15 deg for the buttermilk. jtree is probably stupid hot and there is very little shade or altitude to escape to.

In reply to: Bishop is climbable year round (maybe so is J-Tree) Um.....no. Unless you enjoy scorching temperatures, I'm going to have to disagree with this one...

dude, I live there. I should know. How can you disagree that we can boulder in 65 - 70 degree weather at 8 - 10,000 feet? Right now. I just went yesterday, in fact. I'm resting today, but going back out tomorrow. Like I said, drive north to the mammoth areas. Summer bouldering certainly doesn't get any better anywhere in the U.S. (not to say there aren't other choices like colorado or so. cal) Also, locals and visitors are still going to the happy's and buttermilks. It's a bit warm for me, but hey, diff strokes for diff folks.

That's funny I climbed at Rock Creek the other day and it was positively chilly. I was at Little Egypt last night and it was perfect. Mick

I just got back from Bishop on Sunday, I spent my entire time at the Buttermilks and it was awesome, but I'm from texas so it just seemed like home...To anyone else the 104 degree heat may be a tad much, but I loved it!
