Here's a free tip...don't go climbing yet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The best possible advice I could give you is find someone in your town that knows how to climb and more importantly, someone who knows how to set up a top rope anchor. You may want to try taking a few introductory lessons at a climbing gym or guide service. You may get replies on websites to look at but trust me nothing replacecs on-sight instruction, climbing is inherently dangerous especially if you do it wihtout the slighest clue of proper techniques.

Yup, what he said plus there are some good books on learning to climb that cover top rope setups and knots. If you have an REI near by they usually have a class to teach belaying, you really need to get that in person not from a book, I always dreamed of having rock in my own back yard your vary lucky but take your time and do everything just right there's no need to rush. This site is also a good place to find climbers in your area who will be happy to help you out, you might want to post where you are.

No, you cannot just tie the rope around a rock.

If such a website existed, I (and hopefully no one else here) would be irresponsible enough to direct you to it. You cannot learn how to climb safely from a website any more than you can learn to fly a plane safely from one. You need to seek professional instruction from an AMGA accredited guide.

Take the advise of the replies that have been posted to this point. No book or website can replace HANDS ON instruction. Take a course as there are many variables to take into account.

I don't know where you live but if you are any where around Kentucky we will be more than happy to take you climbing with us and show you some safe ways to indulge this sport. If your not close to us I'll bet someone on this site is and I'd also bet they would be more than happy to help you, rather than read about you becoming a statistic

I really hope you take the advice of
the other climbers that have posted
in this thred.
There are a lot of climbers on this site
who can give valuble information,...
but ONLY to people who already have a
working knowledge of basic climbing
procedures. I.E...anchors, knots, harness,
belay, etc.
You MUST stress to the rest of your family
that none of you are ready to even touch
those rocks, until you have PROPER HANDS ON
INSTRUCTION BY A QUALIFIED EXPIERIANCED
CLIMBER.(if you can get a AMGA guide,even
better).
Remember that climbing is potentionaly
dangerous, trying to climb without knowing
the proper procedures can get you killed.
Theres no room for guess work in this sport.
Get yourself some instruction.

When I fist started I knew way way more then it sounds like you do and its a thousands wonders I did not kill my self.

TAKE A CLASS !!!
There must be some school or gym that gives classes in your area. Most big stores can help you too.

Whatever you do .... do NOT climb Yet!!!
Go and get a qualified trainer to teach ya all the basics first or at least someone who knows something.
God knows what can happen if you don't.
*I feel Climbing is a great sport and even a way to live but be advise its dangerous if you have no idea of anything.
Learn to walk before you leap.

Granted, books aren't going to prepare you for the real thing. However, they could be an ok source for learning how to tie knots. My friend Ed has a Rock Climbing: for dummies book. I've looked through it, and it seems that the knots are correct in it.
However, the best possible advice I could give you, go to a local gym and take a few lessons. They teach you how to belay, tie knots, set up top-rope, and all the techniques you need for safety.
Climbing is all about safety!!

PLEASE do not climb yet. As an instructor at a local gym I would caution students that the lesson they took did not qualify them for outdoor climbing. Sometimes I would have to tell them of a local case I heard about where someone did exactly as you have proposed.
They're dead.

Do yourself a favour, before you even think of climbing, check out a couple of the books to get a basic understanding of what the sport is about and what various equipment can do for you. You can't just hook up a rig and expect it to be safe. Every piece of equipment has it limitations and they way you set it up is crucial to your safety. After you have done that find a gym and go and check it out, a great place to see what belaying is all about and the guys there will show you how to do it effectively so that you don't kill yourself. Climbing is a dangerous and lifethreatening sport if the proper safety precautions are not adhered to. Please get some formal training.

There is good information out there on the web and books. But first, you need to go to a gym or climbing school and learn to climb from a professional. I know you want to just go out and start climbing. I think alot of us started out thinking that we could just go out, tie the rope to a rock and tree, and start climbing like there was not that much to it. Later, you will learn how much is involved and how a class is soooooo helpful. Don't go climb until you take some classes. PLEASE!!!!

go to a local gym or EMS or any store that has those little booklet things about climbing courses you can take and take a course. a book wont tell you what you need to know. climbing is dangerious if you have no clue what your doing. go take a course.
