Ontario's big.... you'd be smart to specify an area with in two hours of driving or so

Ontario is an awfully big place. Are you thinking Southern Ontario (Toronto, Windsor, Kitchner etc) or Northern Ontario (Sudbury, Souix St. Marie) or Northwestern Ontario (Thunder Bay, Nipigon, Dryden)?

There is lots of exposed rock, it is the Canadian Shield after all, but your location is going to make a huge difference on the kind of climbing you can do.

Sorry for not being more specific.

I am talking southern Ontario. I climb with my girlfriend and have been wanting to hit the escarpment to do some outdoor climbing but my gf wants us to go with some climbers that have experience setting up anchors. However, none of our friends/family are climbers. We have done very little outdoor climbing and can't wait to get some experience. We are climbing 5.10s indoor. Thinking about joining a club but need to research who.

Thx.

Wing man,

Me and my climbing partner have recently started climbing outdoors. We have set up top-rope outside and are fairly comfortable with the process at this point.

We currently climb during weekends at the crags in Milton, but would be willing to go somewhere else within driving distance of London. Let us know if you want to climb with us sometime. It is advantageous to climb in pairs because each can climb on the other's top-rope setup, i.e., two can climb for the price of one!

PM me if you're interested.

Sid

PS: I won't be climbing for the next 2 or 3 weekends though, I'll be out of town.

PS2: Isn't there a top-rope ban in effect at the Escarpment?

This is a good idea.

You can contact lots of experienced local climbers through this site. An alternative would be to take a course. Equinox Adventures offers an "out of the gym" course for people with indoor experience. It focusses on setting up toprope anchors. I took it and would recommend it to others. Other outfitters may offer similar courses.

You can toprope at Rattlesnake Point (busy and lots of classes) or nearby Buffalo Crag (less busy). There is a toprope ban at Mt Nemo and possibly other locations.

I also offer courses for people who are moving from the gym to the outdoors. Check out my website. www.waypointadventures.com. I'm running a course in the 3 week of August if you are interested or I can arrange one for you and you climbing partner.
