Could you narrow that down a little - perhaps province or even a city? Someone from around your area might be able to tell you a good place to go. There are MEC stores across Canada, and you can order from REI (US equivalent) as well. There is some stuff you should try on first.

although i have never been, i think Novacks (not sure of the spelling) has some pretty good stuff. it is in London, so it would be close to you. not sure how knowledgable the staff is?!? if you don't mind travelling, Adventure Guide is a pretty good store in Waterloo. I can give you directions if you want. some of the staff are idiots, and some of them know their stuff. if you don't mind driving even farther, MEC is right downtown TO, and there a couple of other stores within walking distance as well. i tend to frequent Adventure Guide and MEC - just depends on what I am looking for. Thanks for the info, i've already call Novacks. I'm new to climbing, i've only ever done it indoors. I want to do it outdoors and would like to buy some equipment for myself. Right now i'm just looking for a rope, and mabe some shoes. I really didn't know they cost so much. I'd like to get one cheaper if possible, thats why i'm trying to find some desent Canadian sites, its usually possible to find stuff cheaper online. Thanks. Matt This is one site i've found http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_listing.jsp?FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=579307&bmUID=1059173161896 (i think its canadian) But i'd like to find some more sites for comparisson pricing.

I'm looking at the Maxim 10.5 Non Dry Rope 50m for $135.00cad. or same rope but 60m for $155.00cad. I'm leaning towards the 50m one. These are the spec.'s; UIAA test fall rating of10. Rated to an impact force of 9.43kN. <--whats this mean(how much force? Weight of 70.66g/m. is 9.43kN)? Stretch of 4.8%. Available in 50 and 60m lengths. Also the Maxim 11 Non Dry Rope 50m is $140.00cad. , or 55m is $150.00cad. These are the spec.'s; UIAA test fall rating of 14. Rated to an impact force of 9.62kN. Weight of 75.2g/m. Stretch of 4.8%. Available in 50 and 55 metre lengths. Are these good ropes and prices, if so what rope would you sudjest ? Thanks for any replies. Matt

9.43kN of force is roughly 9,430 Newtons, rounded due to significant digits. Or, 9,430 kg*m/s^2, if you like. That rope should be fine. Make your decision on rope length based on the climbing areas you intend to go to, and the lengths of their routes. Other threads on this site will happily go through the conversion of kN to pounds-force for you. If you're just starting out, most any rope you select will be fine for your uses with the caveat of length noted above. You'll learn what does and doesn't work by the time you need to buy a new one.

In reply to: I need to find some Canadian online stores to buy some equipment from, does anyone know of any sites? Thanks. Matt What you need help doing is getting off your lazy ass. In three threads you've asked a half dozen questions which you could find the answers to in 5 minutes using any web search engine. Grow up and do your own homework. The web isn't a place to recruit others to do it for you. -Jay

jt512 is right, and even for climbing-related questions, try the 'quick search' in the upper right corner of your RC page for your topic. Chances are you'll find a whole whack of threads on whatever it is you want to know, before you just post your question and find few answers amongst the "how many times must we hear this question?" complaints! That aside, that rope has a bit less stretch than some; basically the lower the impact force (ie 9.9kN vs 8.5kN) the softer the 'catch', and the more it'll stretch. If you're new and toproping less stretch is a little more convenient. My first rope was a mammut flash, 10.5 from MEC in Canada, about $150 or $170 or so for 60m. Mammut makes great ropes, high fall rating, comfy catch, and it handles great for knots and flaking etc. I'd recommend it to anyone. peace, -p

Hey jt512, I would have used the forum search had I known there was one. I had already made the three topics before someone told me there was one. At the same time I was posting these topics I was trying to find info using Google, but figured if someone already had info on any of these topics they might be able to help. Also I didn't want people to go searching for info me, but if they already knew some of the answers to my questions it wouldn't take to long to post them. anyway thanks for the help. Matt
