Well, my indoor gym uses wire brushes to get chalk and rubber off. I thought it would wear down the holds to no friction, but they said they have had no problems with it. They are only 3$ at lowes or similar places. And recently i have heard that "acetone" dissolves chalk. Not sure if it would react with the plastic though. You might want to research it. But IMHO, i'd just say use brushes...wire or hard plastic bristle

We use a dishwasher in my gym. No drying cycle though. Works fine. Holding surfaces down toward the sprays, regular DW detergent.

Pretty sure this has been asked before....if you do a quick search you'll probably find something. However since you asked: Warm soapy water and a brush will get most of the chalk off your holds but the rubber is slightly harder. We use a dishwasher at my gym, set it on Pots and Pans add a little Dish Detergant and 45min later I have nice clean, and dry holds to place back on the walls. As long as your carefull that your holds don't touch the heating element and burn the plastic I've never had a problem letting the machine dry the holds. Chris

Seriously, with acid. Not sure which type, but you need to get the "non water soluble" stuff out from the porous surface of the hold. Quality gyms, use acid to clean their holds.

I believe that the acid used is Muriatic acid . . . but don't quote me on it . . . you add a little of the acid to a tub of water and do some light scrubbing . . . rinse thoroughly and the holds are sparkling clean.

In reply to: Quality gyms, use acid to clean their holds. Depends what your talking about Adam... if your "quality" gym takes the time to soak 3000 foot jibs in acid then brush the chalk off then I'd say your gym isn't quit as busy as our gym. We don't have the time to do this, and a dishwasher works just fine. However, on our "biggins", we use acid and brush them.

I used to use muriatic acid when I was working at a gym, pretty good for large amounts of holds(5-6 gallon bucket works great.) but for a home, I'd just go with the dishwasher.

muriatic acid does the job with no scrubbing required. but for home use you might as well just get a keg tub, some dishwashing soap and get scrubbin.

If they're still on the wall, a simple brush will take care of excess chalk. Running the holds on speed cycle in the washing machine will take care of grease and whatnot. Make sure you put the jibs and footchips in the utensil holder and set the bigger holds on the bottom rack.

You should only use Muriactic acid every 4-5 washings.....if you use it every time you wash your holds it can start to break down the surface of the epoxy, which will cause a loss in texture.....I really like Simple Green, it kicks ass for washing holds, especially at home, where you dont really have as many holds to wash as you do at the gym.....Just spray the Simple Green on, scrub it a little with a stiff, plastic bristled brush, and wrinse it in water......your holds will retain their texture much longer this way.....and if you choose to use a wire brush, take it easy with that thing.....climbing on glassy holds sucks......hope that helps...
