greetings, i lived in houston, tx, for most of my life and wasn't ever really exposed to climbing. after living in athens (GA) and boulder (CO) and in the hill country of texas, i've discovered for myself the enjoyment in the sport. i've spent a couple weeks back in houston, and while gym climbing is better than nothing, for sure, i was wondering what houston climbers do to get outdoors ... or are most houston climbers gym rats? not that there's anything wrong with being stuffed up in a large room with clouds of chalk filling it while pulling on plastic in the middle of some of the flattest land within a hundred mile radius but .... sL

Behold what Google hath wrought: http://www.houstonclimbing.com/TMR/ Actually, I knew about the Texas Mountain Raiders, but there you go. Hook up with those guys. They have some nice trip reports with photos, too. -Tim

Austin (3 hrs) or Enchanted Rock in Fredricksburg (4.5 hrs) or Mexico (potrero) - (10 hrs) basically if you live in Houston and you like to climb, you learn how to spend long periods of time in a car without your ass going too numb ....

In reply to: In reply to: ahhh... Houston. the one city worse than Dallas for climbers. Houston and Dallas - the armpits of Texas. - s. Geographically, Del Rio is the armpit. You're thinking about the a$$hole(s). We got more than one in this state. Yeeehaaaaaw!

E Rock is the crappiest rock i've ever put my hands on. All week I researched bouldering in the Austin area and everything on line from the locals said erock is this great pink granite. I get there and from 500 yards away the boulders are beautiful. I get up to one and say.... "this ain't granite!" At least its not kind of granite that I've ever seen. I'll describe the rock quality. These boulders were like giant cat turds rolled in cat litter. You could literally rub your hands on the rock and a lot of crystals would just rub off. You couldn't trust a foot on any of the crystals. I've bouldered in a lot of good areas, and a lot of bad areas. This was by far the worst! ......It looks cool though. I liked being there, I just didn't like climbing there.

boulderman- you are correct that there is some rotten, decomposing granite at E-rock but the majority of it is not- and that's what people climb on out there. A bolt or gear placement wouldn't hold in the bad stuff even if you could climb it. Actually, I have found the granite at E-rock to be very bomber and have yet to peel off anything (while climbing). I've been on climbs where I've shifted nearly 130+ lbs onto a crystal the size of a nickel which look like it couldn't possible hold but they always do. Tim- thanks for the link.

I "tried" to boulder there all day and didn't find ONE good rock! I looked far and wide and granted, I found stuff to climb, but it was all crap I tell ya! Maybe it's a style y'all like down there, I don't know.... :?:

Why is Houston and Dallas so bad for climbing? Is it the lack of outdoor climbing or the lack of a good indoor gym? Just wondering because I might be moving to Texas soon. Anyone, please help me with this question! DEC (aka KiltedClimber)
