What climbers in here play soccer?

I was just wondering if any of you all play soccer and climb too. I've talked to a lot of climbers that have played soccer in the past. i'm not talking about when you were 5 years old or something but actually played it and liked it. i guess it might be the personaltiy of soccer players and climbers because to me they seem a lot a like. I think it's also the physical and mental part of both sports that make them similar. Thanks
Andrew

I suck at soccer but I play when I can. Same with Ultimate Frisbee. I am actually good at softball and lacrosse.

I think people who are sporty are just sporty. The end.

I used to play soccer in my younger years but then I picked up lacrosse. I still love to play soccer every now and then but the appeal of lacrosse is much more.

I played soccer in high school and the community college I used to go to was pretty good actually 9 goals (second on the team) my final season and only started like 6 matches of like 22 . Don't ask me what the coach was thinking. I would continue to play at UIC but I need to work now while I goto school so it is relatively impossible. Anyway I'm still pissed that Man. U. traded Beck's.

I played all through my youth and highschool. Played for an Illinois state team and traveled to a few tournaments in Europe. Played a bit in college before ditching it for the ski team. I don't think I've touched a soccer ball since. Personally I don't see much connection between soccer and climbing but you never know.

Beck sucks. Man U. Sucks. Look how well they did in the Champions league. Inspiring work I'd have to say.. The ability to score goals is meaningless if you are A) a ball hog or B) physically unable to compete.

I play soccer when I can. And when I have money.

Soccer used to be my sport of choice. Haven't played in a couple of years, but played on a co-ed and womans team. We had british coaches so we played a hard game.

yes yes bad move for Beck. should have stayed with MAN U. he's just gonna be another face in the crowd now. And why would you need money for soccer? just get a ball and juggle.

He sounds more like he was bagging on himself, and the title of the post asks if anyone plays, so how to answer that without some putz like you claiming it's spray - duh! Now don't read the next lines because it's gonna' sound like spray -

Soccer is what gave me the competitve spirit and I think translated to climbing in a big way. I played for a little over 9 years (this was when Pele was god!), three seasons each year, with a little winter training sprinkled in. Nothing better than winning a championship! Kind of reaching the top of a climb after working so hard....

Used to play - lettered in high school, intramurals in college (not good enough for Division 1!), then had a real blast after I hooked up with a bunch of Brits & Caribbean types (Jamaican, Trinidadian, St Lucian etc) for a Saturday run that went on for about 10 years. We'd run, then adjourn to someone's pad, cook up a curry & suck down beers. Alas, my knee started degrading at about the same time other interests (marriages, families, homes) took up more of my buds' time, so no more. Still miss it BAD though, especially around World Cup time. As far as the mindset...the best players I met (phenomenally skilled, wicked fast, etc.) all seemed to be very humble, modest unassuming guys. Capable & confident, not arrogant. The guys with mediocre skills always seemed to be the ones spraying, ESPECIALLY from the sidelines. That DOES remind me of a certain subset of climbers...

Sorry no soccer for me, only lacrosse. Although I can see the relation you are talking about between soccer and climbing because there is a similar connection between lacrosse and climbing. The physical demands and high endurance really help while cross-training.

Interesting post.
Yeah I play soccer. Didn’t start till college when I got sick of wrestling. I quit and then tried out for the soccer team. Had friends on the team that basically gave me a few hours every day after practice till I could actually make the team. Now I play men’s, co-ed, and three man strike tournaments as much as I can. I like climbing better so I spend more time doing that now. soccer by far was the most fun team sport I have even played.
Climb on.

Is it possible on this message board to say anything that remote sounds good about yourself withou being labeled a sprayer? I'll make sure next time I say "I suck at everything I do" just to please people like you longalong.

Anyways soccer is the best team sport, and it is amazing that when you practice the kind of control you can have over a ball with your feet. I think the majority of rock climbers come from any and all athletic backgrounds just that they come from athletic backgrounds usually.

Mr. Rearend,
I'm not claiming it's spray you 'tard, it is spray. No crap you have to say a little about your soccer background to respond to the thread. However it's SPRAY when he tells all of us how many goals, number of games, and how the coach didn't give him playtime(you baby). And no I didn't find what you posted to be spray. I found it to be you trying to live in your glory days. So guess what? STFU you tool.

Soccer used to be my obsession, what occupied my thoughts nearly all the time... I played for 10 years, until 5 years ago when it became too painful to play because of tendonitis in my knees. It really sucked having to give it up. Now, climbing is my obsession... it hasn't bothered my knees yet, other than sliding on scree on approaches. :)

Not sure that there is any relationship between soccer and climbing but I have been involved in soccer most of my life. Played most of it (average player) until age got to me and now have coached at the high school level for six years. Just loved the game.

It made me laugh when I thought of it.

Oh and since I never answered the original question I'll do so now. I played soccer for 8 years. Something bad occured so I then changed to another sport. That sport was being a porn star.....good times, goodtimes.

I think if there are any similarities they might have something to do with, in part, that both are viewed as existing outside the norm, at least in the United States. The general public sees climbing as dangerous and eccentric while soccer is understood as a European or South American sport. Maybe people climbers/soccer players like doing something different.

I've been playing ball since I was 5 or 6 and still do, in some pretty competitive men's leagues around denver. It's nice to have a little competition every now and again. I'm a keeper and everybody needs a keeper.
