I only back up with an auto block if I don't know the rt and can't see were I am going or if I think I will be messing with gear.

It depends (tm). Usually. And with my belay device extended; prusik to the harness: http://www.rockclimbing.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=4596 Let's see if I can stir this pot again. Hehehe.

If I plan on possibly using both hands for something else, such as cleaning a route, I'll use the backup. Otherwise, no.

I use a brake attached to my leg loop. Maybe you would call it an auto block?

Tried it, didn't like it. Maybe when rapping with a pig or under other extreme conditions.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Depends on the situation. I use a bachman above my device.

Almost never. Have tried a Petzl shunt. Too heavy and specialized. If I did, would be an autoblock or the like below my rap device on my leg. On some rappels I start out with a biner clipped to my leg loop and a munter hitch (it I'm goin' skinny on a single strand). But...99.9% of the time, nothing. For better or worse...knock on wood (!)... Brian in SLC
