Hi -

Always happy to climb with new folks in Tokyo - gym and/or outdoors.

My regular gym is T-wall in Edogawabashi. Pretty much every Tues. and Thurs.

In addition, subject to family constraints, I get outside with friends as often as possible. Sport and trad. Regular destinations include Makuiwa, Jogasaki, Joyama and (this time of year) Ogawayama.

Pleased to do my best to provide beta for newcomers, or whatever. (I've been here ten years or so, and speak a fair amount of the language.)

Drop a note if you're in the area.

- Bill

my ex girlfriend has started going to edogawabashi t wall...she says they rebuilt some of the walls and no longer use the extraordinarily stupid picture-of-the-wall-in-a-notebook route system. true?

Legless -

Berkley, huh? Sweet. I did my three years of purgatory at Columbia - god I hated that place... What year are you?

As for the Edogawabashi T-wall, they re-built the whole bouldering section of the gym - differently shaped panels, etc. It's a nicer layout now, with more light and more open space. The lead and toprope area is unchanged.

They have a bunch of taped routes on each of the boulder walls, but once you work your way through those, you're back to the diagram in a book system - same as it ever was. Nothing like getting two-thirds of the way through a long problem, only to discover that you can't remember the next hold. "Uh, excuse me, could you hold that diagram in front of my face for a second, please..."

Let me know when and if you're heading back over!

i just started the program this week (ergo a 1L).

i wont be back for a while...earliest possible date would be christmas. if you happen to meet a hiroko at the t-wall you might mention you "know" her (ex) boyfriend (we are on good terms....she wont hit you or anything).

Heh, heh, heh. Will do.

Good luck with the 1L crazyness. None of the concepts are hard, but they sure do layer on the jargon. (Gotta ensure that laypeople will continue to need us members of the profession to solve their problems, I guess.) And of course the volume of reading is a nightmare in the first year.

Just like a lead on rock - don't panic and plug on through!

I will be in Tokyo for New Years, after spending a couple of weeks in Krabi. I would be interested in visiting the climbing gym in Tokyo when I get there.

Hi smap -

That may be do-able, but it'll depend on your schedule. The country pretty much shuts down for the New Year holidays, so we'll need to check the holiday schedule for the various Tokyo gyms. In addition, my folks often come over from the States to visit at that time of year, so that may be a factor.

Anyway, if we can get the scheduling right, I'd be happy to hook up.

(Outdoor climbing is also good at that time of year, if that appeals to you.)

Keep me posted on your schedule as the time gets closer.

And by the way, did you know that your user name is the same as that of a hugely popular Japanese pop group?
