Two of us are driving from Jackson Hole to NH and climbing on the way. doing stuff in the Winds and Tetons first, then the needles, s. dakota... then i don't know (until we get up to gunks/cathedral/rumney)

If anyone has strong recommendations for any type of climbing loosely on our path, let me know.

leaving jackson about sept. 1

Looks like you got it pretty well nailed already. The Needles are fun for a few days to break up the trip, but after that I would just high tail it east as fast as the car would take me. September is prime time for the Northeast, so get here as soon as possible and enjoy it!

I grew up in the Midwest, and pretty much agree with edge -- its not really worth stopping. There are places to climb, but not real "destination" type spots. You would be better off just getting east as soon as possible after South Dakota.

The exception might be if your route was VERY loose, and you can make it to Southern Illinois for some bouldering. There has been lots of development in the past few years, and I guess its actually becoming kind of a destination. I was shocked to hear my Boston-bred bouldering friend mention that he wanted to take a roudtrip to So Ill someday.

Of course, by the time you've made it that far south you might as well go to the Red, and then the New. But then you will be REALLY out of the way in order to get to the Gunks.

Have you looked into Lions Head in Ontario? Its probably more on your path. I don't know much about it, but it might be a worthwhile stop.

Good luck.

Sams Throne, Seneca, and some of the bigger stuff in North Carolina.

If nothing else climb Seneca as it is awesome. The gunks will get better in a few weeks so don't rush here. End of sept into November is ideal. Daks should be peaking by end of September to middle of October and I'd assume the same for NH.

Forgot the NRG but that because I've never been in love with it. Lots of single pitch climbs and IMO not any better then Sams Throne just more plentiful instead of 500 climbs you have 5000. The scenery is nice though with the river and the brigde in sight of many climbs. Perhaps budget a day or two for the NRG on your way to Seneca, Nelson and Champe Rocks. Also the Via Ferrata at Nelson looks really cool but I didn't get down there this year to try it. I know via ferrata isn't climbing but it could be a nice diversion from actual climbing, of course NRG could be considered the same thing  .

In anycase between the Needles and the Appalachians you won't have much trouble not finding much to climb.
