Wel, first of all, I'm glad I found RonAmick's post, it's extremely well written. I am also glad to say that I (as well as my buddies) already know the wonders of beer + bouldering. Like my old pal Homer Simpson said: "Beer, the cause of, and solution to, all of life's problems." to the naysayers: ah eff it, let 'em miss out on the good times. Cheers.

Popping ibuprofen while climbing is a bad idea, since it will increase the risk of injury to tendons via it's anti-inflammatory properties (the body's capacity for swelling is a natural defense against further damage to minor tissue inuries). I'd just drink another beer--it's a veritable panacea when it comes to taking care of many minor ailments such as sore muscles and hangovers. :) If all else fails, obtain a prescription for marijuana (as you can in Ca and a few other states) and smoke yourself silly.

In reply to: 000 I attribute my 150-odd FA's in San Diego County to a hearty regimen of beer and hostess fruit pies. Short-term fuel sources work for quick bursts of energy. After several days of this sort of diet, though, I would think a certain degree of lower capability (and increased irritability) would ensue. At least the Olympic Committee wouldn't disqualify you for illegal drug use.

I can see it now....In about ten years when bouldering hits its pinnicale of poupularity largely do to the Kournikova like success of the many young starlets clad in their PrAna Bippy Tops. Coors and Advil will be replaced as the key sponsors of the PBC by the new marketing division of Phillip Morris and the ODB Brewing Company

In reply to: But my friend Bob did much more. He drank 29 beers, did 290 boulder problems, and ran the 29K as well. In the campground that morning he was having a beer and smoke while some other boulderers were just getting their coffee started. They said something like, "not climbin' today, huh?" Bob eyed them like they were crazy and replied, "I've done a hundred boulder problems already." Thanks for the links to his site and "training" sched haha!!! I gotta meet this guy, sounds like a kindred spirit. I thought I was one of the few who thinks beer and a ciggy for breakfast before climbing sounds perfectly rational  .

Although beer will help you boulder better because you will be relaxed and not shit scared of the highballs, clear urine after a beer is because you are pissing out all of your water (in non-scientific terms). Therefore, becoming dehydrated. Dave

They say drink and drive dont mix, and which is more dangerous, rockclimbing or driving. Either way both need safety and concentration, so I think it might be wise to save the grog till after the fun eh?

I share your sentiment entirely. Please direct it in the appropriate direction, dimwit. Because you (presumably) drink water where you climb, does that mean that you litter the area with empty water bottles?

After nearly 30 years of strict adherence to this dietary regimen, I'm still one of the best mediocre climbers in my neighborhood. But come to think of it, I have been kind of grouchy for the past couple of decades.

I have often referred to Ron Amick and one of his favorite partners by the term "the AA boys" But come to think of it maybe it should be triple A. Observed Ron on more than one occasion, high on Mt Woodson (word play accidental) set his, come to think of it not fully consumed can of King of fluids down, and send a heinous mantle problem. Glad to see you've kept up the training regimen Ron.

When you climb you create lactic and uric acid in your muscles in the form of little cristals (thats why when you burn out your foreamrs hurt) The only way this litlle acid cristals can be destroied is by them being dissolved itno the bloodstream and carried to the liver where this organ will transform the molecules and dispose of them. The liver is also in charge of ridding the body of alcohol so if you put your liver to work with alcohol you will accumulate more acid and thats where cramps and nasty pains can come, needless of the fact that too much beer will result in a nice belly.....
